I was just given some quirky ammo from a buddy as a gift. He gave me ten rounds of 7.62 Nato Raufus and 100rds of Radway Green tracers. I haven't shot any of it yet and I fully believe the tracers to be legit. I'm not so sure about the Raufus. I thought that Raufus was .50 cal only. Let me know what you think. I'm gonna shoot this stuff pretty soon and see what happens. I believe he bought it from www.polygunbag.com

Raufoss is only made in .50 BMG. It has an AP core, a small bit of explosive, and some incendiary compound all in the bullet. A 30 caliber bullet simply isn't big enough to fit all that. What you have is probably pseudo-incendiary bullets, with magnesium or something in the tip that will make a flash when it strikes something hard.

Sorry Ian but Raufoss makes plenty besides 50 cal. 50 is just the smallest they make. Raufoss makes allthe medium and large caliber ammo for the NAMMO group, along with grenades and all the other goodies.

Their small caliber ammo is marketed under the brand name of Lapua.

No 7.62 Raufoss

Raufoss (marketed by Nammo) makes a huge range of ammo. See here for a listing of their .30-caliber bullet types - pretty extensive!

If you look at the menu on the left side of the page, you'll see they make everything from small arms ammo, through artillery, to missile warheads and components. Like to visit their factories sometime... :D

From what I've heard this "Raufus" (as opposed to Raufoss Mk211) stuff is made by some small operation in texas. Basically they take hollowpoint rifle ammo, stuff some kind of incendiary into the empty space and paint over the hole.

My wife's uncle was a director there at Raufoss. We got a slideshow presentation and a tour around the offices, but the manufacturing floor is pretty well controlled for safety and liability reasons.

I've been looking around and here is what a seller says on Gunbroker. I'm highly doubtful of these claims.
This ammo is built identical to the 50 cal. Raufus and also has the sea green tip color. This ammo is twice as explosive as regular incendiary ammo. Upon impact you will get a bright flash and bang three times more powerful than standard incendiary ammo. This ammo will burn at 5000 degrees upon impact. This ammo was tested by a police agency in Florida and one round shot through the windshirld to the interior of a car ignited the car on fire and burnt it to the ground. Use EXTREME CAUTION, this ammo is highly flammable upon impact.

Too bad that most of that .30 cal. stuff isn't on the list of their civilian ammo. I'd love to get some of the match quality AP stuff - just because.

They take tracer bullet jackets and pack them with a 70% aluminum 30% KClO4 mix (flashpowder), then seal the ends with a gascheck, last I knew.

Not hard to make, but it is rather unpleasant if you screw up with flash...

The "Raufus" ammo is knock-off trading off the name of the "Raufoss" ammo. It is pretty much the same type of stuff you see at gun shows that has been handloaded by someone. It is as safe to shoot as any other anonymously handloaded gun show ammo that is being misrepresented.

It's definitely fake. When most people speak of "Raufoss" rounds, they are talking about the military-only AP/explosive/incendiary rounds made only for the .50 BMG and larger. The explosive for the real thing is RDX, not flashpowder...

"Raufus" rounds are like "Sieko" (not Seiko) watches...

There are so many things that funny about this statement that it might as well have come from The Onion.

I have bought some of this ammo (the raufus or pseudo-ammo), and it seems to be allright (7.62x39). I hit an oak stump that had been cut several years prior to shooting it, and actually set the side on fire! I think the gun auction sites over-price the ammo a bit, as well as tracers, because I can get the ammo from one other internet source for way less (in bulk though).
All in all, for just sh*ts and giggles or just messing around on a range where there is not much to set fire to, this is a fun ammo to shoot near dusk, or even in the daytime (I have seen "side sparks" travel as far as 20 to 30 feet from impact point, usually to the right or left of impact.
I am not sure about legality in all states, but my local Police Chief said it was ok, and he even had some! (in .223 for his personal/service AR-15 assault rifle).
I just found some in .223, and will probably get a few dozen rounds for my AR-15 just to have for those days when I get bored of paper targets and feel like setting a few stumps ablaze. But have to refrain from it right now, as FL is under a NO BURN, Red Flag Warning. Oh Well, just have to wait for a good rain!
But, I really would like to see the REAL Raufoss .50 cal hit a nice steel plate. Bet it is a sight to see a .50 cal full auto pop off about 40 or 50 rounds into an old car. I'd pay to see that!

It IS quite the sight, especially with API or API-T. Does really neat stuff at close (200-500 yard) ranges.:evil:

No offense, meant of course, and others have said it, but the Soviets had explosive, AP incendiary ammo in WWII for the Shpagin (sic) machine gun and these rounds were loaded in 7.62x54r cases. They will chamber and fire in a Mosin all day long (though not safely).

In fact, the US had some .30-06 API as well. And they had some "exposive" spotter .30-06 as well. But they didn't have any AP-incendiary-explosive in a .30 caliber round.

Pardon, but when referencing the Shpagin, are we talking about the PPsH? If so, it is chambered in 7.62x25 (Tokarev), not the larget 7.62x54R.

The .30 cal rounds I speak of, are not true raufoss. They are commonly seen on gun auction site like the G. Broker site, by the name raufaus. And they are quite hot when they impact, but as far as true explosive, nah! They do, make a bang, but I have actually taken the composition from one, and checked it out, I mixed some mag-al, and magnesium with different oxidizers, and got the same effect when lighting the comp. on the ground with an electric match.
My conclusion is that the psuedo-raufoss rounds on the market for say, .30 cal, .223 (AR-15), and a few other various calibers, surprisingly even a .22 LR IT round, they are just packed with a variation of a "flash" powder, nothing more.
But as I say, this is NOT the true raufoss round.
