IMO:

Every man should have a:

A shotgun
A .22 rifle for small game
A 30-30 for medium/large game
An AK-47/AR-15 (with the knowledge on how to run both) for the upcoming revolution. Don't play like you don't know it's coming.
A combat handgun (full size semi-auto)
A CCW handgun
The testicular fortitude to go from calm to hostile at the drop of a hat, when needed.

Everything else is gravy.

Everyone should have a:

.22 rifle

.22 pistol or revolver

Plenty of cheap ammo.

A safe place nearby to shoot.

A "gunshy" friend to take shooting and show how enjoyable firearms can be.

Another convert to our cause.

AR-15 or AK-47 clone of some kind or another. Take your pick, but get one. It's a subversive political statement sticking it to "the man".

My choices include: SigArms (Hammerli)Trailside .22 caliber pistol, Chris Reeve "Skinner" knife (or any other knife made by him), Tikka T3 Lite Hunter .270 Win., and finally for my primary large bore side arm it would be a toss up between my Les Baer Concept 2 1911 or my S & W Scandium 1911 Commander model.

guns:
-a rifle that can do anything
-a pistol that can do what you need when you don't have a rifle
-a shotgun that can do tenfold what your pistol can do within 60 feet

gun-related:
-grasp of history
-safety/common sense
-lot of money to devote to training, practice, and the fun that your hobby will consume

... well-honed brain to realize when you're being duped, and a pair to do something about it.

Floppy,
I went and got the sandwich.
Dr. Winslow,
I will second your post.
I think we all need a good handgun in caliber large enough to penetrate clothing and still get the vitals. See Model 10 above.
.22 LR rifle/pistol/whatever.
Shotgun (pick one, they are all good enough)
Rifle big enough for wild game in the area you live in. If you live where the biggest wild animal is a whitetail, it can be anything, but if you live in big bear territory, you need more rifle.
Now, you need to spend more time behind the rifle and pistol than you have sitting here posting.
Steve

A really good knife, a Leatherman tool, a metal cup and bowl, and waterproof matches. Guns are nice, but they must be fed and cared for. Joe

..chance to live free!

Thank you..

My original response was going to be:

"Whatever the heck he wants, now get out of his business"
but a chance to live free is a good response as well.
