So, I've built a couple AKs from kits. They're fun and cool and all, but I'm ready to move on to something new (and so is my buddy with the stocked machine shop). The question is, what project should we take on next?

Option 1: Copy a Chinese Type 64 SMG in semi-auto. Use a stamped receiver instead of a milled one, a normal AK front trunnion, a Mosin-Nagant barrel rechambered for 7.62x25 Tokarev, modified PPS43 magazines, and maybe some more ergonomic stock than the underfolder. Oh, and maybe a registered integral suppressor, or maybe just a dummy one.

Option 2: An MG-47 belt-fed 7.62x39...thing. A hybrid of an MG42 feed tray and top cover assembly, AR15 FCG, MG42 grip stick, inverted AK barrel/bolt/trunnion, and homebrew receiver.

Option 3: A more conventional .308 AK using modified HK91 mags. Kind of like a DIY Valmet with a bulged Yugo trunnion, stamped receiver, and shortened trigger guard.

I really have no practical use for any of these (I don't have a big stash of 7.62x25, a semi-only beltfed is a little goofy, and I can't afford to shoot much 308 anymore), but they all would be really fun and interesting projects to tackle (and I have access to pretty much all the parts I would need for any of them).

So...whaddaya think?

Not sure why you'd want to do item 3, except just 'to do it'.

Saiga .308s are readily available and 20 round US made mags can be had for them.

I think a Kalashnikov based carbine that uses Uzi mags (9mm) or grease gun mags (.45) would be cool.

I would love to do a Bizon, but I don't see any way to do the magazines.

I would kill to have the Chinese 64 in semi-auto. I dont think it would be as expensive as the PPSH rebuilds today, not to mention maybe being a little lighter? A guy at our range had the new PPSH that just came out and it is a hoss of a piece (very very heavy, particularly in the front).

Alrighty, the Type 64 clone it will be. I've got a PPSh41 magwell en route, as well as a barrel-less Tantal parts kit. Dunno yet if I'll be going the whole NFA route for a short barrel and/or suppressor, but either way it will probably use a rechambered Mosin barrel (things like PPSh barrels are too small to fit an AK trunnion).

Unfortunately, it won't really be a Type 64 copy, but a Tokarev AK inspired by the Type 64. The Type 64 uses a milled receiver, and only a couple of its parts interchange with an AK. Things like the bolt and trunnion are totally different. Also, mine will accept drum mags, which the 64 doesn't. I hate underfolding stocks, so I'll be using the Tantal sidefolder on it.

Parts are in! Got the Tantal kit, mags, drums, ammo, and prebent 80% receiver. Now comes the real fun... :)

Does RobArm sell parts kits and 80% receivers? Cuz guns aren't nearly so interesting when you just buy them complete. :D

Here's a quick suppressor-less, receiver-less mockup:

OMG! I just found a thread on another board where a guy turned down an Uzi trunnion, pressed it into an AK front trunnion, and then made his (pistol caliber) AK barrels interchangeable just like Uzi barrels. Aside from being way super awesome cool, that's a perfect solution for this project of mine. I can build the rifle with a normal 16"+ barrel and get everything functional. Then register and add a suppressed 10" barrel later on.

It'll also make the headspacing process simpler than a permanently-mounted barrel. I can cut down a Mosin barrel (and turn it to the right diameter), and then cut the chamber shallow, and test-fit it. Then just deepen the chamber and test-fit in small increments until the headspace is just right. No need for pressing and drilling to do the test fitting.

Kilted, it's definitely a semi-only. I don't have any sort of FFL, so no way I can make post samples.

So do you have a link to this other board?

gunco.net

Loads of wildcat builders there.

You know, the guys that wake up in the morning and say "Ya know, I feel like making a .45 ACP Kalashnikov" and then they go do it.

It's here, but you have to be registered to see the thread.

Here's one of the photos he posted:
