Hi. I just won at auction a Italian copy of a colt dragoon however i have been told
that it needs to be sent to an exporter and I will need to the get correct export licence
(I live in the UK)

Is this correct as I was under the impression that in the USA that moden black powder firearms were treated the same as antiques are. So it should be able to be mailed straight to me.

Thanks.

Blackpowder guns are not firearms in the US with the exception of NJ. However, in your situation UK laws have to be followed and you would probably need to get an export license.

If you were in the US, other than NJ, you could just have it mailed to you.

Isn't the barrel the regulated part of the firearm in the UK? Over here it's the receiver.

It's been a while, but back in 2009 i sailed across the Atlantic for the Fastnet Race, and brought a Lyman GPP along for Portuguese Men'O'War along the way. When i got to the Needles the barrel went to Davy Jones' Locker, so i would be in compliance with UK law. (Back then a replacement barrel was $32US).

I have the correct UK documents so it is strange that it looks like it may need to go through an exporter.

Thanks for the reply

Just a cautionary note:
I have never tried to import a gun, but I think its pretty clear that under UK legislation it would need to be consigned to an RFD rather than your home. Frankly I would expect a US exporter to be aware of this by now. I think you would be saving yourself time, at the very least, by arranging the transaction on that basis.
Apologies if you knew that, but were just keeping your query simple :)

I had a look at uk law and it says if its for personal use I can import it myself.
Customs are then suppost to hold it untill I present my ticket to them.
They then add it to my ticket. So no probs this end its only state side where there looks to be probs.
Curse those liberal gun laws!!!!!

That's interesting. Obviously it's still going to be a face to face transaction at your end, as generally required, but I never realised that Customs could or would do this. Good research!
I wonder if it would be the same for that rifle barrel I want... :)
