I have probably the most sweatiest, naturally oily hands out of anyone I know, and I can't seem to put my gun away without oodles of smudges over all my 1911. What do you guys use to clean and wipe down the exterior of your guns? Just any old rag? Or something in particular?

I use a silicon cloth (Kleen Bore) to wipe down my guns. They are particularly oily and/or sweaty after a shoot so I'll put a few drops of CLP on another silicon cloth then wipe them down. I'll use the plain silicon cloth to wipe off any excess oil from the CLP and use this same cloth to handle the firearm when putting it in the safe.

The carry gun gets wiped down and a little oil every few days and taken out of the holster at night.

FWIW, I've actually seen a 120 year old S&W that had a fingerprint in it! It had left outlines in the bleing down to bare steel. I guess someone with a sweaty digit touched it, never wiped it off, and threw it in storage! Refinish, here we go!

Try Eezox

I spray it on, let it sit, wipe it down. The heat of firing and subsequent applications help it to penetrate the metal. Even feels smoother, and is very finger-print resistant. It has unsurpassed corrosion resistance, and even smells good.

Down sides: not readily available in stores. It is available through the net (Google "Eezox" or look on eBay). Worth the effort.

Works on blued, stainless, nickle plated, aluminum, polyester and wood.

SigfanUSAF,

If one fingerprint rusted through the blue on a 120 year old gun is its only flaw, it would be a major hit on its dollar and historical value to refinish it. As the advanced collector told me "100% factory refinish is Zero original finish."

There are people who have very corrosive oils in their skin .They can make a rust fingerprint right through bluing and preservative oil ! There are special soaps available for these people.
