How difficult would it be to open up the magazine well and add a bolt latch to a FAB-10 if you moved to Arizona or another free state?

I hear of people doing the work on 80% receivers. This would have to be much easier. Could it be done by someone of modest mechanical skills? I know I can just buy a new receiver. But, this would be an attempt to salvage what I have.

(I am not advocating anything illegal. Just a conversion when I move to a different state).

on 80% receivers the magwell is finished pretty much some require some mag work but doubt its anywhere near work needed on fab-10

might want to to hit ar15.com and do some looking into it and post in the DIY/Build it yourself section. they would know best. might try roder custom board also. http://www.roderuscustom.tzo.com/

ARs are pretty modular guns. I would think it would be a lot easier and cheaper to just get a new receiver. Either keep the CA-legal one in case you move back, or just sell it to someone in the opposite boat as you.

Actually, you could probably post this concept on the sales side and trade with someone...

I vote for buying an $89-$100 stripped lower and selling the FAB 10, if you should move.

Another vote for buying a new receiver and a lower parts set if you don't have the mag release and bolt open parts from when you built the FAB-10. Why mess with it when lowers are so cheap?

Then again, the answer to that might be, "Because I can!" In that case, buy a new lower and shoot it while you process the FAB-10. If you screw it up, then just post back in this thread that "it isn't easy enough to try." :D

would pass on modifying the fab10 receiver myself. unless you have access to a machine shop or nice tools at the least. drill press maybe mill.

opening the bottom of the magwell would probably be easy. cutting the receiver for the magazine catch and release would be a pain.

in fact if your fab10 reciever looks like this

you might as well forget modding it for magazines. it had 2 protrusions cut off the receiver for the pin that held part of the magazine catch.

lowers at ar15.com are pretty easy to come buy. though for the moment ar15 parts seem to be selling out all over the place. thanks to AWB sunset(sorry for folks in non free states).

Buy the new one......please

I agree - buy the new receiver if you can and don't plan on moving back here to California anytime soon. In fact, you could probably sell it to me for what the new receiver costs!
Good luck to ya. It's always nice to hear when someone "breaks out"
