Humor me. How much of a disadvantage would a FAB-10 be in our mythical SHTF situation in occupied Kali?

I was toying with one of these FAB-10 abominations at the gunshop. I was surprized at how fast you could pop the receiver open and load lose rounds. If you had to, you could treat it like a shotgun... shoot a few, load a few. If you run it dry, transition to handgun.

Any opinions?

I know:

1. The FAB-10 is an abomination.
2. I should move to a better state.
3. There are better guns than the FAB-10.

You know Dave I have never tried to speed load my FAB-10. My 20" upper I just leasurely load for shooting squirrels and I still haven't got around to buying a bunch of cheap FMJ to shoot through my 11.5/5.5 upper. I have found that adapter for the stripper clips isn't the greatest design. Also, I don't know if this is specific to my FAB-10, but my gun will only hold 9 rounds in the magazine. Why? 10 rounds will fit in the magazine, but the fit is so tight, when you close the gun back up and try to pull the charging handle, it won't budge because the bullets won't come down from the bolt to allow the bolt to move to the rear.

In theory this shouldn't be too much slower than loading up your SKS with strippers. The only disadvantage is the SKS has its stripper charger as an integral part of the firearm and the FAB-10 has a bulky attachment that you are going to have to tote around with you and not lose. The FAB-10 does have the advantage of being able to top off as the SKS won't single load until you are out. Both systems are at a disadvantage from the shotgun that can be loaded with a round in the chamber and if a threat presents itself you can still shoot quickly.

For toting the FAB-10 around all day on a coyote or squirrel hunt, it works good though. Simply open the gun up and then place the buttstock inside your right armpit and apply arm pressure to securely hold the gun. Take your right hand and place it over the ejection port. Using your left hand, pull up on the bolt carrier by sticking a finger in the rear of it. The bolt easily comes up and the round will cant .45 degrees or so out. After the round passes by your hand, lower the bolt back down and grab the cartridge. Double check to make sure your chamber is indeed empty, and then fill up your magazine (to only 9!) and close the gun back up. Double check the rifle is empty by pulling the charging handle back a half inch or so and then dry fire. Now you could hypothetically carry the rifle around in your car with an empty chamber and a loaded magazine, just in case you saw a coyote on a "drive by" and wanted to roll down the window/jump out, charge, and shoot. However, it is illegal to drive around with ammunitition in the magazine or discharge your firearm from inside the vehicle and I would never suggest you do so.

El Rojo, based on your experience hunting squirrels, do you feel you could keep the gun running during some sort of situation where you had to shoot a few and load a few? Would it be fast enough/easy enough?

The problem you are going to have with the FAB-10 is that you have to break the gun down in a pivot fashion, so if you are prone, it is going to be a big pain the butt. Standing or kneeling is the best way to do it. I don't see any reason why you can't get on one knee or both knees and reload rather quickly and continue your shooting. I don't think I would want to use it for anything other than squirrels or plinking. I would rather have my SKS, M1A, Garand, M1 Carbine, shotgun, or even any of my easily strippered bolt guns me thinks if I was in a fire fight.

I concur with El Rojo, if you are going to be loading with a stripper clip or loose rounds, at least use a gun that was designed with that it mind.

Just got back from putting 300 rounds through mine. I never use the stripper clips and just hand load the mag. Takes about 25 seconds to open, load 10 rounds by hand, close and charge. No big deal. Great to shoot.

I built it over a SU-16 option because of the ruggedness of the M4 barrel and the strength of the AR-15 platform in general.

For SHTF, you are better off with your Mini-14 or an SU-16.

Do you really want to break open your rifle during a confrontation, or in bad weather?

Cali-legal AR-15. The mag well is...well, there is no mag well, as it takes no magazines. Imagine an AR-15 w/ the mag well welded closed, that's what the FAB 10 looks like. The takedown pin must be removed and the rifle opened up so it can be loaded w/ stripper clips (or one by one) from the top. Then you gotta close it up again, replace pin, then go.

IIRC, I can put pretty much any evil feature on an FAB-10, right? Collapsible stock, flash suppressor, etc.

Hmmmm......

You guys from California really crack me up with discussions about whether you can survive SHTF with the Hermaphrodite 10 or whatever. If you’re really that worried about it, you shouldn’t live there. Personally, if I had to live there, I bet I would do just as well with a bolt action “hunting rifle†or shotgun and a 6 shot wheel gun rather than trying to figure out some rule bending gun that looks like something the cool people get to carry elsewhere but isn’t as good as a lot of commonly available “compliant†stuff. In a real SHTF scenario, especially in a place like Kali, the bad guys are going to pick on some other unarmed person (i.e. almost everyone) after the first shot. In fact, you probably could get by with a flintlock or Colt Navy percussion revolver, so the "FAB 10" shouldn't be a disadvantage. If you just want something that looks “evil,†then just fess up and buy it and don’t make apologies for it.

WYO, what cracks me up are posters from other states bringing their ignorant, arrogant attitudes to our PRK threads. Let me quote the thread starter.

It cracks me up how people don't bother reading the first thread and how they respond with their holier than though attitude about how us PRK residents are foolish for doing what we do.

Can some of you non-PRK residents see why I secretly wish Kerry would win and an AWB II that looked just like ours would come through and I could laugh at how screwed you are and make the good ole' comment, "You should move!" :barf:

El Rojo, you couldn't be more right. WYO acts like he personally won his right to an AR/AK/Uzi or whatever he owns. The truth is he inheirited those rights. We happen to be living in a state that has been flooded by socialists and illegal aliens. Gun owners are outnumbered and unconstitutionally targeted by these laws. I am not leaving my home. And, these laws are not my fault just like the holocaust was not the Jews fault.

When President Kerry bans all semiauto rifles with no grandfathering we will see how tough WYO is then. I hope it does not happen. But, it could. It happened fast in Kali. Kali used to be free.

Sorry, folks, I should have added a smiley face or something. I wasn't trying to be arrogant or condescending. My intended points were, in whatever state, anything will work for SHTF and, if you want something, go ahead and buy it. I moved to a place where I have the flexibility to own different things but I don't think they're necessary at all. Where I do differ from you is that I did move, and gun laws were but one of many reasons. My apologies

Toad, you are 100% right. A lone person defending a home is suicide against an organized group. Pin the defender down and flank him.

I'll come out and admit that I don't want the FAB-10 for SHTF-type situations, nor would I like it for such.

I like it because it looks scary and would piss off people. :)
