I have a friend who is wanting to sell his Mini 14. The barrel is warped and he doesn't want to put in the effort to fix it. I can't seem to find an estimated price for it. So I'm wondering what you all think it would actually be worth. If I buy it I'm going to get a custom barrel made. So what would you pay for an older model Ruger Mini 14 Ranch Rifle, without the barrel?

"Barrel Warped". And how did that happen? The question is relevant on several points. Is this an older Mini with the pencil barrels? Did it "warp" through overheating (and how is the action as a result?) or did he back over it with the truck (repeat question above).
Frankly without further information, in my opinion (there's no bluebook value for "action without barrel"), it's worth about $150 to me. That's what I'm willing to pay for a box-o-chocolate gun that interests me. He may be able to get up to $350 right now on GB what with all the "end of the world as we know it" post Mayan apocalypse panic buying on .223 s/a.

A fair price for a used mini is about $500, that's for a gun that at least shoots straight though.
Its one of the older model Mini 14s. I should elaborate. The barrel is not so much warped. It just has the overheating problem that they all have. Bottom line is the barrel needs to be replaced. Everything else is in working order.

Mini14's don't have an overheating problem that requires replacement barrels unless it's abused. With that said a Mini that needs a new barrel might be worth $250.00. I have a 1983 stainless with 10K rounds down the tube and it shoots 3"MOA all day long.

I picked up a used one from my lgs fro $380 about six weeks ago. It was in excellent condition and was traded into my lgs from a police department's evidence room for credit.
Take off barrels can be had for under $100:

Trying to sell a rifle with a bad barrel is a pretty tough thing to do. I wouldn't touch it and I think few others would. There may be some Mini-14 afficianados that'd want it for parts or as a platform for a build...which I am not sure is a big thing with mini's or not...like it is with ARs.

Hmmmm.....
Many things can be done to quill the whip affect of the pre 580 series Mini 14. Put a strut on it. or have the barrel turned down, have the barrel cryogenicly frozen. You can improve the rifle by just adding a flash hider. from what I have read your friends rifle sounds fine to me.
