FAL or G3

 No offence, just asking why you prefer the AK's bolt handle...The FAL's "charging handle" is in the same position as the AK's only on the left side of the rifle. Other than some folks not being practiced with their "off side" hand being a possible reason for prefering the AK's,your statement confuses me.:scrutiny:

Distance from pistolgrip to charging handle is basicaly the same between the AKand the FAL as well.:scrutiny:

Speaking of charging handles...The FAL, Israerli Forward Assist "charging handle" is a MUST for a serious combat weapon.

have you ever tried to get a stuck case out of a FAL...its a pain in the ass. With the Ak you can firmly place it in your right shoulder, use your left hand to grap the foregrip and then give the bolt a very strong yank with your right hand. This gives you much more leverage then trying to use your support hand to extract the bolt back while only using your right hand to hold the weapon. Hell the AK is even easier to use if your a southpaw.

Normally the FAL should be easy to withdrawl the bolt with your support hand, but when you get some resistance it becomes much harder. My FAL was the only gun I have ever had to kick the bolt open on...and I must have done it 15-20 times.

If the gas is set incorrectly it will short stroke and re-chamber the fired round.
Since the round has been fired the cartridge will have expanded and the recoil system will "stick" it back in.

Stomping on the charging handle will only serve to break the lug off of it.
Rendering it useless.
The correct method to extract a stuck shell is to place your palm on the charging handle, raise the butt 6 inches or so above the deck and give it a whack on the butt using the palm of your hand to "pogo" the charging handle.
It works every time.

With a functioning gas system it should never need to be pogoed.
When I built mine I had to do this when initially setting the gas and trying out different ammo.

The only time I have to do it now is when I forget to adjust it for different ammo.

But that is my fault not the gun.

The gas system was not working at all, which is where the problem was. It was essentially a single shot rifle. Had the gas system even been working the chamber would have opened slightly but it never did. No short stroking no nothing. I fiddle with it as much as I could, but I do not think any gas was getting to OP rod. Your pogo method did not work, trust me, I tried everything short of a bootheel to get that thing open.

I am just guessing that the gases expanded the round so much that the got stuck in there real well.

Two range visits and cleaning the **** outta of it before each and still nothing. I was pretty used to the gas system already due to my FN-49 but for the life of me I could not figure out what the problem(s) was. manually having to kick open the gun for every shot got real old real fast. Sure I could have waiting 8-10 months to sent it back to DSA and hope they fixed the problem the first time through, but lemon rifles can often end up requiring several trips back to the factory. I was far to pissed of after dropping $2,000 on it to sit through warrant work (especially DSA who is slow as hell).

So maybe you can understand why I dislike the location of the FN-FAL charging handle. Now my case was unusual and you should never have to do that to a rifle, but just the difficulty of getting any leverage on it is why I prefer the HK91 and AK charging handle to the FAL.

Sorry but I still do not understand your like of the AK handle and not the FAL,unless it is simply a srtong hand, off hand thing...They are in the same possition only mirror image...BUT,hey what ever works for you is what you should run with.:)

I prefer the FAL to the G3 charging handle possition.Again, works for me...G3 works for you:cool:. G3s are great.I just see more advantages to the FAL.

Fortunately we get to chose the system we owne privately.:)

I hear ya' in regard to a weapon that you spend your hard earned money on,only to have it be a POS...Feel like throwing as far as you can. And if you get a bad one that tends to taint ones opinion. For me that souer taste is for DSA not the weapon sustem...Tho' I know they can make great products I still have that question in my head.

Like I said I work with these every day but when you get a crappy one,you just want it gone. That goes for any weapon, car, truck, what ever...

If I still had my FAL I could take some photos to explain the charging handle situation better.

I do like FALs, don't get me wrong. I plan on getting one again in the future, but I am a bit picky on the models I like, and buying a kit rifle can be an iffy venture over the net.

PTR

I bought a used PTR-91, it looks like it has done a few tours in Iraq and it has approximately 2000 rounds through it. The first time I took it to the range with some cheap wolf ammo I shot two 1" groups and four 2" groups at 100 yrds. They were three shot groups and I shot those with the peep sight.

I'm going to get the trigger tuned up by Bill Springfield though.

I have had both Fal and HK Clone (PTR 91). The PTR 91 sure seems more accurate to me. I like the feel of the PTR 91 as well. I don't shoot it allot but it is a fun gun to shoot. I like the A3 stock. I like the sights better on the PTR 91 as well.
