Favorite 30-06 rifles

While I'm certainly an admirer of Garands, I'd have to say my current favorite .30-06 would be one of my Remington 7400's. Probably the nickel-plated Weathermaster.

Why? I think the main reason I like them is just because no one else does.

Of course, a freezer full of venison every year doesn't hurt either.

I'll also vote my 03 (1st) or my Win P17 (2nd) for bolt action. Garand for semi-auto (3rd).

760 Remington. I like the pump action and especially the DBM, makes it really quick and easy to make the rifle vehicle safe and then back into hunt mode. A nice characteristic when hunting deer with dogs. It's plenty accurate too, overall a very nice rifle.

My 1917 has never failed me in the field. Keeps the freezer packed with meat.

As for a favorite, I would have to go the other way on the BAR comment. Every film I have watched makes the original BAR look like the most fun thing in the world to play with at the range. The sound alone is what gets me. Nothing else in the world has a report like that. If I could afford one, I'd have it as part of my collection.

M1 Garand and 1903 Springfield for their history.
Savage 111 (or was it 110) - A great rifle, very accurate and a joy to shoot.

I would say the M1917 rifle. Fairly decent sights, a rediclously strong action, very accurate and did deserve to replace the Springfield but was screwed over because it wasn't thought up in the US so the people testing it had a little hissy fit and cried.

Big dollar...but Sako. Hands down.

Don't handle one unless you are ready to buy it. All else will fall short from that day on.

What Hawken50 said...

Nothing beats the sound of 8 BLAM! & Ping!....

Plus, the gas-operation and 9Lbs of rifle soak up a lot of the "kick". Have shot some of the '03 models, and to me, it was a lot harder on the shooter (ME!) than the Garand.

Not much of a computer gamer, but when I play a WWII shoot-em-up, I ALWAYS pick the M1, unless I gotta have a different weapon for a specific scene.

Weatherby Ultra Light

I have hunted with mine for the better part of a decade, and have taken all sorts of game with it. Light, accurate, well made… what’s not to like?

I have five .30-06s, a Garand (everyone should have one), two M1903A3s (one Remington, one Smith-Corona), a 77 Ruger (the old shotgun safety version) and a pre-'64 Model 70 (mine was made in 1939.)

I'd be hard put to choose a favorite among them -- but the Winchester is THE hunting rifle.

+1 for the garand.

I've got another C&R too, '03 springfield, but haven't shot it yet, so can't vote for that one.
