Favorite general purpose rifle

A rifle built off a Surgeon Action with a 23" barrel in .308.

If you have or could have one rifle (that is not an ar-15) That you feel would be good for every role, from hunting to defense to the mildly tactical what would it be?

Remington 870 with an 18" improved cylinder barrel.

700 in 30-06 and if i cant have that ill take a 30-30 marlin lever action with peep sights....

Short barrel .308, like my Remmy 700 SPS Tactical, can fill a multitude of roles. Since its a military caliber, ammo availability won't be an issue.

My choice would be my Marlin 336c 30-30 Win.

Hm. Fire and reload while prone? Easily clear stoppages without total disassembly? Have a relatively flat trajectory?

Firing a lever prone certainly isn't impossible and neither is reloading albeit it's not fast like changing mags. I really have not had stoppages that require total disassembly on my 30-30 or my .357 1894c... yet. Yes the trajectory is an issue at 150 plus yards but where I live they don't even allow rifles for hunting and I really can't see much of a self defense argument at those ranges. In the spirit of the thread from where I live I consider the 30-30 a better "general purpose" rifle over a semi but that's just my preference.

Naw, it makes a good monopod. I am fond of shorter mags myself, they are detachable so you can change them when they get empty.

30-30 lever action hands down. Or most any other lever action.

Reasons? Plenty of Power, Fairly Light, Decent Capacity, Quick Repeating, short enough barrel for the house, long enough to reach out a couple hundred yards, and Supreme Reliability what more could a man ask for?

I was looking at a couple rifles today for just as a ranch gun/go to gun in a defensive situation and I can't decide, a tactical mini 14 or a springfield armory socom 16, you guys have any input on my dilema?
