Favorite Makarov Ammo

I shoot all I can find. Not even afraid of a little corrosive ammo from time to time (Clean it afterwards). The feed ramps on mine have been worked a little.
My favorites for carry are Barnaul HPs and the Hornady HPs. The Barnaul's are great because they are also affordable enough to plink with.

Barnaul is good stuff (and the JHPs are somewhat hot) ... my favorite is PSGrand (clean, brass cased, accurate)

both can be found at www.dansammo.com at good prices.

Only ammo I have found for the Mak that I didn't like was Wolf (imagine that :p ) It was dirty and not as accurate as the Barnaul stuff. And Hornady ... quality made ammo but low powered (more like .380) and expensive. Barnaul JHP is much better for SD.

I haven't shot any but I hear if you can get your hands on the NLA Corbon 9x18 thats some good SD ammo.

I just picked up three boxes of the green boxed Norinco. My new (new to Me) russian loved it. I shot a 2 inch hole out of My target from 12 yards away, with one box. Good stuff.

What brand of ammo does yours like?

Whatever's cheap at Dan's Ammo. $55 for 500, _delivered_. Can't beat that.

The only thing it's ever not liked was Silver Bear 9x18, which had some quality control "issues".

Barnaul HP is the all around best.

I reload a 95 grain lead bullet that is the most accurate.

Silver Bear 120 grain is the most powerful but is too long and jams in many magazines.
I set the bullets back a few thousands and use it as a defense round.
120gr bullet at 1000 FPS

Other than that I'll shoot any ammo that I can get for under $5.00 a box.:)

Not to start a war here however most commerical mak ammo is not the best,
I reload and the only brand I have found to be fair quality is Sellier & Bellot,
also winchester white box which is made by S&B.

I've shot four different kinds so far. PS Grand FMJ (50rds), Silver Bear FMJ (450rds), Silver Bear JHP (50rds), and Barnaul JHP (150rds). The only one I've had any failures with is the Silver Bear JHP, I shot it indoors and it worked fine but then I shot it outside in about 15° weather and it kept getting caught on the feed ramp and was a two person operation to clear it as the round was half way out of the mag. As mentioned, the Barnaul does smell kinda bad but you get used to it. It also turns your hands green hehe.

I feed my Mak homemade food, no take-out ;)

I reload with 95 gr Hornady XTPs and bullseye powder, and get about 1050 FPS
