No point in "venting" or "retort".

A nice refutation calmly and logically written would be in THR's tradition.

Has anyone pointed out that the study foolishly ignores that their study population may be biased to include gang on gang shootings where you'd expect the banger "victim" to have a gun?

A valid study would look at a national distribution of shootings outside of high crime neighborhoods to remove the bias.

Has anyone pointed out that if you're looking at populations of people shot while carrying a firearm you're biasing your data to produce results showing people with guns get shot more often?

Wow, alot of hatred and no substance, not even worth trying to talk to them. Notice how many of them expressed explicit wishes that we die? and then expressed that self defense is tantamount to murder and a dead victim is morally superior to a survivor. There is no arguing with blind hatred or ignorance

I got past reading the post and two comments before I was about to throw up and gave up.
Not even funny

I don't get mad much anymore. I've found its a waste of good energy that could bear fruit in other paths, like doing some work to my trucks, cleaning my weapons, target practice, R/C cars, or smoking a really good cigar.

the stats are correct.

Guns are frequently used against their owners and you're more likely to shoot yourself or your family and friends than any robber.

Plus, and this is something people who watch movies don't get, they tend to jam, especially if you try to use them under pressure when it's confusing. Takes a lot of training to overcome that - something virtually all gun owners do not have.

DOH'

REALLY?

You really can't argue with someone on this level of ignorance.

Exactly.

I find trying to post anything in these 'comments' sections to be an utterly worthless exercise - everyone is trying to transmit and nobody is trying to receive. It's all about 'self-expression' and group identifiction, and not about learning.

So why bother? A well crafted letter-to-the-editor or to your state/local legislators on some RKBA topic or another likely gets far greater traction...

Vent? No way...that thread on Slog was the most entertaining piece of drivel I have read in a long, long time. It was WAY better than reading alien abduction or impending apocalypse stories in the "Weekly World News"... :)

As Ron White would say, "You can't fix stupid" so I don't even bother trying. Fight for your RKBA with people who can make a difference -- congressmen/women, legislators, judges, etc.

The study estimated that people with a gun were 4.5 times more likely to be shot in an assault than those not possessing a gun.

The Pennsylvania study only looked at 40 cases involving shootings. 40 cases in a high crime neighborhood in Philadelphia.

Seriously, 40? That's supposed to be statistically relevant? LOL

Penn researchers investigated the link between being shot in an assault and a person’s possession of a gun at the time of the shooting. As identified by police and medical examiners, they randomly selected 677 cases of Philadelphia residents who were shot in an assault from 2003 to 2006. Six percent of these cases were in possession of a gun (such as in a holster, pocket, waistband, or vehicle) when they were shot.

6% of 677 cases is 40. That's hilarious.

Well, I performed my own study yesterday.

In my town of 45,000 people yesterday no one was killed with their own gun. My findings show that people are never killed with their own guns.

Fault my findings as compared to the Philadelphia study.

I love how that person tried to say guns jam often. Seen a revolver jam lately? I've fed 300rounds through my pistol since I bought it without a jam....oh wait, I take care of my gun so it won't jam.

Perhaps the blogger's opinion is based on a .22lr SNS...they do jam, and often...but even those can be made into something reliable with a little work (usually feedramp/extractor issues).

So I guess the 3 times in my life when I produced a handgun and the bad guys ran off is a fluke?

Unless you shot yourself while doing so....:scrutiny:

If any of you have read Freakonomics, he makes the best argument about how irrational the fear of someone owning a handgun for hd is. The fact that more children die each year from swimming pool drownings than gun related accidents says it all right there. Where is all the uproar about people having swimming pools.

Some Whacko Comment Poster said:
That's interesting. I know that if I owned a gun I would do something stupid with it and either get in trouble or get hurt.

IMO the above comment is a succinct summary of the 'thought' processes of most antis.
Translation:
"I'm irresponsible, irrational, and unstable. I cannot control my impulsive behavior. I believe that everyone is as messed up as I am. Therefore, guns must be banned. I refuse to apply rational thought to the fact that billions of people handle potentially lethal objects other than guns every day and do not use those objects to kill innocents."
