My take on it is, if you don't trust them to be fully-functioning members of society, worthy of the government's protection of their natural rights... don't let them out of prison.
Two things. First, as Bobson stated in the posts immediately before yours, we don't have enough room to keep all of these folks incarcerated. Second, they have already violated the social contract and earned abrogation of certain rights. A legal sanction of being a person prohibited from owning modern firearms does not mean they have lost their "natural right" of self-defense; they've simply lost access to one tool.
