To put it even more in perspective... the incident I related occurred out in the middle of of about 30 sections (square miles) of land. It could have been bad though, and spread across his ranch to smaller acreages with homes a few miles away - which is why we called for aerial resources to assist
Our training is to "anchor" the fireline at a safe point and then "flank and pinch" rather than just rushing to the head of the fire and trying to stop it head-on. A bunch of trees sure ain't worth dying for.
Worst part was that we are pretty sure some of the landowner's guests started the fire
The whole point is that any kind of emergency responder has to be alert to potential hazards from people as well as directly from the incident itself
