Got a birthday coming up and ive been thinking about picking myself up a decent 1911.

Looking for a single stack from one of the reputed makers hopefully not running me more than say 15-1700 bucks.

Guess I could scrape up some extra cash but would rather not.

on the other hand, would rather not have to "upgrade" in the future as well.

help me out here highroad 1911 guru's.

Reccomend some 1911's and options ect ect for me eh??

thanx in advance yall

I would say look for a colt... will be way less then 1500, but if you want to spend 1500 ish Les baer is where you want to go.

That price range gives you a lot of options. In my opinion, a Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special is tough to beat.

That kind of money won't get you a Wilson, Nighthawk or Ed Brown (unless you find one used), but you can get a Les Baer for that. Wonderful guns. Take FOREVER to break in but once they do, they're nice.

You might also consider getting a dirt cheap Springfield or 70 series Colt and having your pistolsmith work something up.

In that price range Les Baer, RRA or Springfield Custom Shop. Here's my baby.

The Les Baers are very nice.

Another alternative, unless you want to spend more (nothing wrong with that if you can afford it):
I would look real hard at the DW's. If I had that much to spend on a 1911, this is probably what I would get. They seem to be about the best thing going if you compare quality and price. Better 1911's can be had, but for a whole lot more $$. Internal extractors (at least the last time I checked), very nice fit on all mated parts including slide to frame fit, and AFAIK, no MIM internals. Most folks report a 200-300 round break-in, and pretty much 100% reliability after that. I'm sure if there are voices of disagreement, they will be heard shortly.

I'd probably recommend you start with a bit less than the kilobuck-and-a-half guns. They're certainly good, but I'm not sure they're where you want to start.

Personally, for a new 1911 person I'd recommend a Springfield Loaded (runs $700-800ish) or a S&W ($800ish). Those will get you into the 1911 world at a reasonable price and you'll have a very solid gun that would also take well to modifications if you feel them desirable later.

I agree except for the SA part. :)

A Colt WWI reissue (model O1911) or Series 70 reissue (model O1970A1CS) would be perfect.

Good luck and enjoy!

A Gold Cup Trophy (Blue or Stainless) is a great choice. Load it..shoot it. Leave it stock.

I just bought a S&W1911DK. I thinks it's as good as the Gold Cup. It is well made. It is accurate & reliable. You won't regret buying one.

Funny how Baer owners come out in droves.

I'll + whatever number we're at for a Les Baer @ $1500. A PII will get you a superb hand fitted 1911 with match Kart Barrel with an accuracy guarantee of 3" (or 1.5") @ 50 yards.

If you're gonna get into 1911s, might as well do it right the first time. :)

I just bought a Taurus PT1911. I've been happy with it so far, but I haven't shot a high-end 1911, so I have nothing better to compare it to.

theken206 well, would seem im sold on a les baer pretty much

seems like either the TLR and the PII will suit my needs pretty darn well I reckon.

Pretty similar, with a few big differences:

TRS vs PII
Solid trigger vs. 3-hole
Fixed night sights vs. adjustable sights
single sided safety vs. paddle shelf ambi safety
checkered vs serrated MSH
thin grips vs. standard grips
no shockbuff vs. crappy shockbuff
TRS logo vs. Baer Custom
Baer Custom vs Caliber marking
Dehorned vs non-dehorned

The most noticceable difference would be the sights between the two model. I like the sight picture on the adjustable sights better, also if I picked a fixed sighted Baer I chose the Custom Carry over the TRS.

or Series 70 reissue (model O1970A1CS) would be perfect.
Although I like Colts ... I recently purchased, brandnew, a stainless Series 70 reissue ... and it has issues ... serious issues. In fact, I'm ready to officially brand it a POS.

Frankly, the last Springfield Armory Mil-Spec in stainless that I bought is a superior pistol to my new Series 70. Better fit, better finish, more accurate, more reliable.

I like the new SA TRPs for around 1300. Kimber has some nice options for around 1100 - 1200. The Warrior, the SIS ... I'd take a look at the Dan Wessons as well; I don't own one (yet) but I'm pretty impressed by the ones a few of my friends own ...

I can't believe no one has mentioned an STI. That's what I think of when I think high-end 1911, at least much more so than a Springfield. Heck, even I have a Springer.
