I picked up my first AK today after doing some research online. I have wanted one for a while and even shot a few and finally decided that its time to jump in head first.
I traded a guy one of my pistols for this and from what I can find out online it is a Hungarian ROMEK AK 74 Cal 5.45 x 39. That is where my fact finding mission has ended. Here are some photos of the new girl, what do you think?
Im trying to learn as much as possible about this weapon so figuring out exactly what it is will be a good place to start.
I would appreciate any input the experts care to share with me.

The gun is probably worth about 300-350 if you were looking for a value. Other than that have fun trying to find single stack 5.45 mags.

If you intend to keep the rifle for a while, I highly recommend you stock up on ammo. With a stroke of a pen on an executive order, all foreign ammo imports can be stopped ( and at some point, will be.) Last I checked, the 5.45 ammo was very reasonable, but it will not last. Do not put it off, go get a case, ammo can it, and put it away.

Oh yeah, cool gun. I loves me some AK's !! ;)

i agree with the above post... 5.45 is basically surplus only ammo.. it will dry up at some point and will take a while for factories to begin offering it.. so stock up on ammo now...

does this take single stack only mags?.. if so, id convert it for doubles... and probably put a regular pistol grip and buttstock on (unless youre in california, ny, etc)

Yep single stack mags.... Hard to find too... I will stock up on ammo and would like to get some single stack mags if Ican find any.

Not to offend you, but that rifle looks to be in rough shape, and it's romanian; not hungarian. Just a question; what was the pistol you traded?

As stated above that is a Romanian rifle. It is not only stamped Cugir which is the factory in Romania and ROMARM, but it is also clearly marked "MADE IN ROMANIA."

Other than that have fun trying to find single stack 5.45 mags.

Well it took me exactly 37 seconds with this new thing called google.

Oh and they cost a whopping $8.

That said if it were my gun, and I was going to keep it, unless there were state laws preventing me from doing it I would modify it to take double stacks, put a different stock and pistol grip on. If that is a welded muzzle nut covering threads, then I'd cut the weld and put a muzzle device of my liking on there. You may raise 922r issues by using standard double stack mags. I'm not familure with what parts on in these particular guns to competently advise you on that point. However, depending on what you paid I would rather sink the time and money into a Saiga 5.45. My Russian guns are nicer than my Romanian ones.

If you look online you can find tutorial on how to open up the magwell to take double stack mags.

okay i stand corrected, didnt think single stack 5.45 mags were that available

Concur, with all.

Sharp Romak. Shoot it like you stole it.

That's a sharp-looking rifle. Those Romanian skeleton stocks are VERY comfortable. I love how they feel. Make for a very handy rifle, and have a spring recoil plate in the butt. If you get rid of that stock, you'll regret every minute of it. I have one on my PSL, and put one on my converted Saiga .223.

My advice is to have it opened up for double-stack mags. Any competent machinist or gunsmith should be able to do that. Or hell, even you could if you know what you're doing and have a Dremel.

If I was you I would buy one of those polish blank receivers for ~$20 then take it to a mill shop and have them mill it out to the same size to accept normal mags. My shop charged me $10 to mill it out. Beautiful rifle btw.

Thanks for the info on the mags for $8, I have been looking and so far no luck. I ordered some of these mags this morning and they already shipped! APEX is earning many gold stars in my book.
Now if I can find the muzzle brake that has the 22mm threads to attach to the FSB I will be happy.

Nice pictures.

I am not familiar with this particular variant; always interesting to run across something new.

Looks like a solid find. AK rifles are fun, and the 5.45 is a fun and cheap round. I would stock up on ammo, shoot it till I got tired of the single stack mags, then get the magwell opened up and buy a supply of full-sized magazines. That would probably necessitate some part swapping to comply with 922r, but it's not a big deal at all. If you need assistance figuring that out, pm me or another member here after you look around the internet resources.

Congrats on a good find :-D

+1. Go for the double-stack.

CNC warrior has some muzzle devices in 22mm. I believe the have flash hiders. They also make 74 style brakes. I do not know whether these are made to specs of real 74 brakes or if they are look a likes like tapco sales. I cursory investigation didn't yield the answer. However, you could look into that further. CNC Warrior has a good reputation.
