First Range Report w/ Eotech 512

My first trip to the range with my new eotech 512 on my CAR 15, was actually less than impressive. It took me awhile to zero it(im guessing you are supposed to zero it at 25 yds?) and after I did it was definately punching 1 hole at 25 yards, but the further I went out the worse the groups got(I know I know, obviously that is going to happen). It is supposed to have a 1moa dot, but the best I got out of it was about 5 inches at 100 yards, which is just unacceptable, considering I, in my brief stint with this gun, have made 2 1/2 in groups @ 100 with the irons.

Its definately a blast to plink with, and play around with some CQB drills, but the MOA really bothered me. One problem I had was after I stared at it for so long, it became 3 dots and for some reason, my eye did not want to focus on it anymore.

I'm sure things will get better with time, I'm hoping I just need some more practice. Lucky for me, I LOVE to practice


What kind of MOA can you guys get out of your Eotechs? What is your average, and what is your best?

I think this might be part of the problem. You're not supposed to actually look at the sight itself. The EOTECH projects a hologram inside the little box, if you focus on it too closely it will go fuzzy. The idea is you focus on your target and the hologram will be automatically in focus in your field of view.

Don't think of it like a regular iron sight where you focus on the front sight. You've got to retrain your thinking a little bit.

I'm with the previous poster, concerning continuing to work with it and try to adjust how you're using it. The dot subtending 1 MOA only describes its physical properties, not the performance the sight, weapon, or shooter can manage. I do think, though, that if you continue working with it you'll get performance similar to what you do with iron sights. That has, at least, been my experience with the 512.

Wow, kind of surprising. Last time out a friend & I were shooting at 3/4" dots at 75 yards and hitting them fairly easily.
Just as a test, try using your Eotech w/ a couple sand bags at 100 yards and check if it's the user or the tool

I agree with the other posters. I doubt it's the sight causing you problems. You just need to get used to the change of sighting system on your rifle. Hey, it's a good excuse to hit the range and practice more often.

I switch back and forth between my co-witnessed irons and my Holosight on my AR carbines. I can shoot much more accurately with the red dot, especially at longer ranges.


BTW, I zero mine at 50 yards. That gives me around +/- 2" drop out to 200 meters or so which is way more accurately than I can shoot off-hand.

Will the EOTech still cowitness if you use the quick detach mount, or does it then sit up too high. I think I'm going to put one on my AR instead of the Millet I have floating around in the safe, but I like the QD option. Of course I guess it doesn't matter if you can cowitness...

Good input guys...I will take everything into consideration. I wil try looking at the target instead of the dot. It definately makes sense. I will also try the sandbags, I am pretty darn sure it is the user and not the tool. I have a week and a half break, so I will be hitting the range quite often.

Keep the suggestions coming, also I would like to hear what all you other guys/gals can do with your eotech...Just a little something to look forward to with some extra practice.

I find that it helps to turn the brightness down to as low as possible,doesn't draw the eye so much.

If you are shooting at 100yrds this is real good advice.

The EOTech is a combat type quick acquisition type optic. It really isn't built for precision long range shooting.

I also shoot better with irons at 100 yards and I have heard others say the same.
