I'm planning on buying my first rifle here soon but need some help on which one. I'm looking for a semi automatic rifle that is fairly customizable. My budget is small at about $300. As far as caliber I'm open to pretty much anything.
Thanks!

A Ruger 10/22 is one of the most customizable rifles ever and should be pretty easy to find for less than $300.

If you want a centerfire rifle, you can probably still find an SKS for that much with a little searching, or some versions of an AK for around $90 more. Both of those can be heavily customized -- as long as you understand and follow the requirements of "922(r) compliance."

Sam1911 is correct on the Ruger 10/22. They are fun to shoot and have more accessories/add-ons then just about any other rifle (with the possible exception of the AR-15).

You don't say what is important to you except for price. How about accuracy? If accuracy is important then that excludes most cheap (under $300) military rifles.

The Savage 64 series is a great semi-auto .22 that sells for anywhere from $130 for the base model to about $300 for a gorgeous laminated, thumb-hole stocked beauty. Very, very accurate!

A bit of looking around will likely net you your first 2 rifles for that budget. I strongly recommend a basic bolt action 22 for a first gun. Semi auto is fine and dandy but I believe you will burn ammo at a excessive rate where as the bolt gun will 'prolly see you actually focusing on accuracy to a higher degree.

For $300 you could EASILY find a quality 22 and a centerfire like a Marlin 30-30, Remington bolt gun and others. Remmies are an especially good value now with the scare over the triggers...

guess it depends on your priorities and proposed uses for the guns.

Be safe and enjoy the hunt for the rifle
Patty
