Fla. House Approves Bill on Self-Defense

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - People who feel threatened anywhere they have a legal right to be — even on the street or at a baseball game — could "meet force with force" to defend themselves without fear of prosecution or liability under a bill passed overwhelmingly Tuesday by the Florida House.

The measure essentially extends a right Floridians already have in their home or car. Under present law, however, people attacked anywhere else are supposed to do what they can to avoid escalating the situation and can use deadly force only after they've tried to retreat.

"I'm sorry, people, but if I'm attacked I shouldn't have a duty to retreat," said the bill's sponsor, state Rep. Dennis Baxley. "That's a good way to get shot in the back."

The measure passed 94-20. It had already passed the Senate and now heads to Gov. Jeb Bush, who has not said whether he will sign it. It was the top priority of the National Rifle Association in Florida this year.

Baxley said that if people have the clear right to defend themselves without having to worry about legal consequences, criminals will think twice.

Opponents said it will make Florida like the "Wild, Wild West," but defenders say it is really no different from what most other states allow in laws governing self-defense.

Opponents said it will make Florida like the "Wild, Wild West"...

Yeah, right. The streets will run with blood. Every fender bender will turn into a shoot-out. The streets will be flooded with AK-47s.

Why can't leftist extremists ever trouble themselves to come up with occasional new lies? Are they really that uncreative?

Fingers crossed on this one. My bosses daughter was attacked on I-Drive the other day. Fortunately the poop, sorry the perp was caught

I think that it will become law. Although according to the bill, it will not become law until November 1, 2005.

Time for all you Floridians to send JEB an email and urge him to sign the bill.

Please send email to Governor Bush to ask him to sign SB-436/Castle Doctrine.

IN THE SUBJECT LINE OF YOUR EMAIL PUT:

PLEASE SIGN SB-436 - Personal Protection/Castle Doctrine

Send email to Governor Bush at the following email address:

That's the same thing the gun-grabbers said when Floirda became a "shall issue" state.

Funny thing the "carnage" never materialized

Sorry, I noted under wrong day in my appointment book. Effective date is October 1, 2005

It passed unanimously (at least in the senate, havent checked the house vote yet).

Jeb isnt going to veto it. And if he does, his veto will get overridden. No one wants to be seen as soft on self defense.

I just spoke on the air (via phone) on CSPAN in favor of the new FL Self-Defense Bill. If anyone was watching I was the St. Petersburg FL caller who identified myself as concealed weapon permit holder and a RN.

You mean you actually have to try to RETREAT from a person who is threatening you with a knife or a gun? Where are you supposed to go? Most of Florida's weapons laws seem pretty reasonable but this just doesnt make sense.
