Please help!
I called police department in Fort Lauderdale, FL, and a lady on the phone tells me I need a police permit to purchase a hand gun. NRA's website claims I don't, that I only need permit to carry.

So which one is it??? How do I buy a handgun in Florida??? What is the procedure???

Your best bet is to go to or call a gun shop and ask them what is required.

Remember, not everyone that answers the phone at the LEO shops are LEO's but either voluteers or administrative staff and not all of them are up on the law.

That is why they usually have signs that state that they are unable to give legal advice.

Unless your residency has changed since your previous posts, you are not a Florida, but rather a resident of New York. It is illegal for you to buy a handgun in Florida, since you are not a resident of Florida. That is federal, not state.

If something has changed, and you are know a resident of Florida you don't need a permit to purchase a handgun. You would go to the gun store, possibly several, and find a handgun that you like. You fill out the appropriate paperwork, they call in the background check and get an approval number. You give them your paper or plastic, and if you don't have a carry permit you will need to wait 5 days. If you do, IIRC, there is no waiting period, but I may be incorrect. Remember, no permit means that carrying is verbotten.

Reason for edit: Correct typo.

First, you have not stated but I will assume you are a Florida resident. I believe in the state one does not need a CCW license to buy any type of gun, though there is a waiting period of 3 days if you don't have a license. The license allows you to streamline the background check process. On the other hand, considering the Ft Lauderdale area politics I would not put it pass the authorites on having a country or city law making it required on having a seperate license to buy a handgun.

The waiting period in Fort Lauderdale (actually, Broward County) is 5 days, not 3. There is no waiting period if you have a FL CWP.

There is no "handgun permit" system anywhere in Florida.
