I will be flying in to Portland Oregon soon and I plan to bring a Pelican 1700 case with a 12 gauge and a .22 in it, broken down. I also have 2 lockable steel pistol cases with cable ties attached to the frames inside my 2 checked luggage bags. Each case contains an unloaded handgun. Empty mags but no ammunition at all.

Im flying from Virginia. Am I going to have any issues once I land in PDX? I read this online: http://www.oregonfirearms.org/portofportland

So I'm just a little paranoid that they will arrest me the minute I land. All guns are locked and unloaded.

Am I good to go here? I am a Virginia resident relocating to Oregon flying with family.

I fly from ORF to CLT to PHX to PDX

This DOJ Letter to Rep Don Young (AK) will have equal applicability to Portland.

"The Department of Justice agrees that the provisions of section 926A apply to the

situation set forth above assuming: (1) the person is traveling from somewhere he lawfully may

possess and carry a firearm; (2) en route to the airport the firearm is unloaded and not accessible

from the passenger compartment of his car; (3) the person transports the firearm directly from his

vehicle to the airline check-in desk without any interruption in the transportation; and (4) while

carrying the firearm to the check-in desk it is unloaded and in a locked container. This

interpretation reflects the apparent congressional intent in enacting this provision, while allowing

State and local law enforcement to continue to enforce their firearms laws aggressively to

promote public safety. We will inform the applicable law enforcement authorities of our

interpretation of section 926A."

Carry a copy with you.

If you may legally possess the firearm in OR, then you may legally transport it from the baggage claim area to your means of transport in accordance with Federal Firearms Transport regulations as outlined and interpreted by the Dept of Justice above. No local or state laws may preempt this.

First, let me warn you that Portland, in particular, and Multnomah, Washington, and Clakamas counties are vehemently anti 2A. The area has become as hostile to lawful gun ownership as any California metropolis. I would strongly suggest you call the Port of Portland and get the current information they are operating under. Laws are laws and will eventually be observed, but how much time and money are you and your family willing to spend?

The article you site appears to be about carry on your person. You can post here https://www.northwestfirearms.com/ for help with finding a good answer.

I am pretty sure that you are fine with normal transportation, though. There is just an ongoing hassle with Portland not wanting to recognize state carry laws.

Since I travel to Oregon frequently, I got tired of disarming whenever I crossed the border from Washington State. I'd unload the handgun, lock it in the car safe, lock the ammo in the trunk. Or, just leave the gun at home. It occurred to me that some day I might slip up, get pulled over for a traffic infraction and end up in the graybar motel, or worse. In any event, I applied for and received an Oregon CHL so I don't have to play musical chairs any longer.

That said, I wouldn't be concerned about transporting a lawfully possessed, unloaded gun through Portland, particularly if one is not in possession of ammunition.

I'm only throwing out some thoughts here, I'm neither a lawyer nor an OR resident.

Yes, Portland is becoming more anti gun everyday....glad I left. Keep them unloaded and locked in their containers preferably stowed in your trunk and you will not have an issue transporting them. The Port of Portland will only apply to the airport and not most of the rest of the Portland tri-county area.

Check out the OFF site for specific laws in the state.

You'll be fine, I wouldn't worry about it. Nothing you will be doing is in any way illegal. The WA County sheriff is actually very pro-gun as well. Just because the dirty hippies on an individual level are anti-gun, the laws are very good. As far as the Port saying you can't CCW in the terminal, well you can, and they don't have any way of knowing, and it is a non-issue since 99% of who is in there is travelling hence not CCW anyway.

Portland is weird. Portland people are weird. Portland people working for TSA are (not-THR comment withheld). Just flew out of PDX earlier this month, barely made the flight because my kid's water bottle wasn't quite empty. Anyway, the irksome task of dealing with PDX aside, RPRNY has supplied you with the pertinent information.

Stay safe and enjoy beautiful Oregon

It is pretty, but I felt like a drowned rat the whole time we were there. I didn't want to part from who we were visiting, but was very glad to come home to my sunny, arid state!

Oregon is wet for sure. It seems to me the residents of the Beaver State march to their own beat. It takes time to get to know them and appreciate them. I'll be retiring this year right across the border, I can't wait to get to know my neighbors better. My gun dog especially can't wait to become more acquainted with Oregon's chukar partridge :).
