It seems like more folks are consolidating day in and day out anymore. What would be your choice of just having one hundred rifle, For deer, bear, elk ,moose, and caribou?

I`ma thinking a 308 would be just fine.

The 30-06 is the most versatile cartridge that has been developed in the world. More loading date, choice in reloading components, and factory ammo than any other. When I decided to choose one rifle for he lower 48 I got an Winchester Classic model 70LW in 30-06. It isn't the fastest or most powerful but it performs consistently.

Cheers,

Depends a bit on the mission, but here in the upper midwest, I would go with a short action in 243 or 308. Easier to shoot, accurate, plentiful ammo and reloading components. Of course the largest thing I am likely to want to kill with it would be whitetail deer. Longest target range (paper) is 600 yards and longest range for game here is realistically 300 yards (most much, much closer).

I did consolidate my hunting setup.I found a nice model 70 in .308 for a nice price and don`t regret it a bit.For the conditions and game I hunt,I can`t get any better than the .308.Uses less powder than `06 and shoots about as fast.I will never need to shoot a bullet over 180 grs.and the short action makes for a more compact rifle.
Sold my 338wm and bought a 9mm.I was glad to be rid of that expensive to shoot gun.

30 06 for ALL hunting in North America will win this debate hands down every time. IMO, the main reason this is the case is that the 30 06 handles the heaviest bullets much better than the .308.

30 06 is the handloaders dream.

I only have one hunting rifle, and it's a .308.

I've killed bull elk, bears and coyotes with it, deer, wolves and other stuff, too.

Used to be 30 06. WW2 was a long time ago. I think the 308 with todays powders does about everything you could ask for in an all around rifle. About the same ballistics as an 06 with less powder and shorter actions make lighter rifles.

I did pick a 30.06 (Savage 110) when I wanted a do it all rifle. A .308 would be just about as good. They won't shoot 220 gr. bullets but there aren't many animals that require such a large size. I have some anyway just in case the local bears plan an attack on my house.

This is my thinking too, purplus ammo can be cheaper to shoot than the 06 as surplus ammo ha dried up.

8x57 Spanish M44 Mauser, as long as I get to handload. 200 gr Partition @2600fps should be great out to 300 yards for Elk sized game, 400 yards (or a little more) for deer sized game. 200 gr BTHP for slightly longer range target work (gotta practice:) ). 125 gr SP or HP for coyotes. 170 gr cast lead for plinking and small game.

Or 30-06.

Or 7x57.

My Remington model 700 in 30 06 has been doing the job for fifty years. Why change now?

I asked my wife's nephew what he was hunting deer with and he said, "oh I've just got a 30-06." I don't like the guy very much so I didn't tell him that a 30-06 is about the only rifle I hunt with any more. He's such a dufus I didn't want to feed his ego. the wife told him that if he got another divorce we were going to keep his wife and git rid of him. He probably don't like me much either!

This question, in one form or another, has been asked countless times .
Everybody has a favorite so at best it`s opinion driven.
That being said, an original Win 71 in 348 cal.

The simpler question would have been what gun, but instead it says rifle. A 16ga pump is a nice compromise as an all around gun, 12 and 20 work too but 12 is too heavy at times and I would want more oomph than a 20 for brown bear.

So back to this rifle conundrum. The thought strikes me that everybody went bolt action. A .50 smoke pole would work too as would a 45-70 lever gun. As always with this question, your giving up a lot to try to gain it all. It's like trying to pick just one hammer. Sure a 12 oz claw will drive a nail but you may need to break rocks, so it's going to be hell driving nails with a 12 pound 4 ft handled sledge. Pretty much any center fire will work, as would most rim fires with shot placement and luck being key. The answer here will end up as 30-06 but others will do just as well. 308 is a short 30-06. 270 is the same as a 30-06 just smaller lighter bullet moving faster and flatter. 7mm is not very efficient but will do it...yep pretty much anything from 22-250 to 50bmg can be argued intelligently but it all comes down to your preference. Honestly, if I had to pick one rifle it would be a .270 or a 6.8. Most will pick a dirty thirty. In brush country there will be folks picking 30-30 35rem 44mag 45-70 etc.

Pick your action based on terrain. Pick your caliber based upon versatility and variety of critters in that terrain. Then go shoot them and eat them.
