For conceal carry: HK P7 vs. SA EMP?

I have never shot the HK but I have handled 2 or 3. I have shot the EMP (9mm). The .40 is heavier so I assume you have the 9. As for CC I really like the EMP, now if they just made a bobtail version!

Okay guys. Thanks for all the input here. Good points on both sides, but better points made for the EMP. I will keep the EMP for carry. :)

Oh, and 357 Terms, I think a bobtail EMP would sell like hotcakes. I would definitely trade my EMP for a bobtail EMP!!!! I can't put too many exclaimation points on that! I hope Springfield Armory is reading this, too!!

Everybody needs at least ONE P7 - I've got 5. But I would NEVER sell an EMP to get one. That would be a decision you'd regret in the future.

Keep carrying that EMP but save up for a P7 in the future - it truly is an amazing handgun. Incredibly accurate, reliable, and SAFE. Soft shooting, and low riding in your hand - very comfortable.

IMHO, the regular P7 is the ultimate carry weapon because of the slimness, lack of external controls, compactness, and the fact that it goes from totally safe to totally lethal in a split second. As much as I love 1911s, I just could never get comfortable carrying cocked and locked.

Happy shooting!

SA's custom shop will bobtail it for you. if i remember correctly, it's close to $170. :)

Let me make sure I'm understanding you right. SA's custom shop will bob my EMP? :scrutiny: If this is right, I will be on the phone with them on Monday!

When you call, be sure to be very specific about what you want done and what they will be doing.

The other Bobtail 1911s on the market combine a full sized frame and a Officer's Model size MSH...which is the shortest in current production. The EMP already uses this size MSH. The Bobtailed EMPs that I am familiar with have been custom cut and welded jobs and cost a lot more than $170 to fabricate. They can be done, it is just a matter of cost...not too surprisingly most top tier 1911 smiths aren't also Master Welders.

I might be wrong, but I think what The Springfield Armory Custom Shop is offering, if they offered anything in that vein on the EMP, would be something like the Round Butt option offered by Dan Wesson

Their price for the modification on the full sized frame is listed as:
1. Modify frame for “Bobtail style” mainspring housing (Mainspring housing included) $225.00*
*Requires refinishing at additional charge. See Refinishing list for additional cost.
2. Armory Kote™ frame & frame small parts only (Specify Flat Black, Matte Black, or OD Green) . $ 80.00

Here is a comparison of the difference on two Dan Wessons. Officer size frame on the left with a roundbutt and full size frame on the right with a bobtail:

now that i think about it, $170 might be the price for bobtail full size 1911's. give them a call anyway. can't hurt. (i think 9mmepiphany might be right though)
