Which is the correct method for target shooting in USPSA competition, both eyes open or one eye closed?

I wished I had asked this question 5 years ago ...

I shot for 3 years with one eye, as that's how I grew up shooting rifles and shotguns :(

Learned that 2 eyes was the only way to go, and I'm still trying to train myself to do so consistently.

I think I would have shot worse to start out, but would have progressed faster if I'd have only know 5 years back ... :(

According to "the Great One" (Rob Leatham), shoot whichever way you are more comfortable. This probably means one eye open when you are stationary and shooting at distant or partial targets; both eyes open when shooting on the move (walking or running). Both eyes open should allow you to move faster and target-transition faster, but one eye open is more accurate. If you do not have eye dominance on the same side as your strong hand, you may have to shoot with only one eye open all of the time.

Both eyes open unless something truly keeps you from being able to do this. Both eyes open is definately the best method by far. Some chapstick or clear tape carefully placed on your glasses to reduce the dominance of one eye is second best but only as a last resort.

Eric Graufell, 3 world shooot champion shoots with both eyes open at short, fast distances, one eye at long distances, same as I do...
qoute from said E graufell, after answering the same question at "global village" (A very good IPSC forum, http://www.ipsc.org/) :

"when I shoot standard, I shoot with one eye closed, after 10 meters, before the 10 meters, both eyes open... Maybe I am not normal too... but it doesn't matter, it works for me.."

i do the same as others have mentioned. both most of the time, but if they put a target out there i will close one eye for a better sight picture. what works for some will not work for every one though. try both see whats faster, and provides the better hits. joe
