I found a s&w model 17-4 with a 6" barrel today at a sporting goods store. The gun is 98 to 99% condition. They are asking $650.00 for it and will not come off the price any. Is it worth it or not? I am in the market for a da 22 revolver. I am curently looking at a new model 617 for $679.00.Which is the better buy?

That is a tad high on the M17 from my point of view. Bought a 4" 17-6 a month or so ago for $550 OTD (incl sales tax) which I thought was a heck of a bargain. I would buy the M617 if they had the 4" since it has the 10-shot cylinder which can be nice especially for plinking. Otherwise, I would probably get the Blue no-lock 6" M17 even at $650.

Yes, if I was actively looking for one I'd get it too.

The pride and satisfaction of owning a nice classic firearm will last a lifetime.....long after the sting of a bit of a high price is long forgot about.

That's not far off the mark. You don't ever pay too much for a Mdl. 17, you may just buy it a bit early.:)

Probably not helpful, but I bought a 95% Model 17-4 for $350 about five tears ago.

Now, the helpful part. I thought the price was a little high at the time, but I have never regretted it since. The revolver is a beautiful shooter with an excellent trigger. I've taught my kids to shoot with it, and I often take it out on my own. I tell the kids that they don't know it yet, but it's probably the finest handgun they will ever shoot.

last year prices, or two year ago prices don't mean anything today
but I paid $550 and $600 for mine a couple or three years ago (?), k-17s

me, if buying today (at OPs prices) I would still go with the k-17, no contest

5 years ago I paid $430 for a 97-98% 17-0 4 screw. Relative to what you paid, I'd say we both got decent deals at the time.

But as oldfool points out, K-22 prices shot through the roof about a year later.

The price the OP quotes is spot on, or maybe just a hair high from what I can tell in today's market. I'd go for it if I was in the market.

Yep. Me too.

As I said it's just a tad high; meaning $600 is about right for me.

Prices on M17's and M18's have shot up in the last year or so by about $100-$150. One dealer in my area has one for a firm $700 (~98%).
