Hey guys, I am preparing for a 3-gun competition this weekend and my bottle of frog lube busted and I had to throw it away....

Now the bad news...I don't have a replacement for it.

The only things that are available to me are at my local Walmart and they are: Breakfree CLP, Rem Oil, and choke tube/gun grease.

I have no experience with any of these, so which of them would y'all recommend to keep my guns (mainly AR) lubed and running for a Saturday? (Any other suggestions are welcomed as well)

Either of the first two should keep it running.

Have you tired Slip 2000 EWS lube compared to Frog Lube? I have tried a bunch, but never Frog Lube.

I have heard good things about it, and intend to try it, I just don't have anywhere near here that has it for me to get my hands on before Saturday... :(

that's actually an interesting question. because of hte way you apply frog lube with heat and its claims about absorbing into the metal, and going from a congealed to liquid state under use... i don't know how you clean frog lube off in order to replace it with something else.

That's what I was wondering about....

I'm not exactly wanting to "replace" it, but if I were to run into problems would applying a different CLP or Rem Oil help?

i thought the whole point of frog lube was that it stays in place for a long time

you're worried about not being able to touch it up for one shoot? what do you shoot at one of these events, ~45 rounds?

i wouldnt worry man

Actually, close to 200 with the AR, and sometimes more.

I'm not too worried, but I don't like going out without a solution in case I do have a problem.

Grab a bottle of CLP just in case. If your rifle is well lubricated with the FrogLube and you haven't wiped it all out or something, I expect you will be fine for a 200 round competition. If your rifle is cycling slow, pull the BCG and wipe off the FrogLube, apply CLP liberally and finish the match. You'll be fine.

You don't need it until Saturday? And it is currently Monday?

Why does it have to be something crappy you get locally at Walmart?

I am in college and don't have time to drive anywhere. And I don't want to pay express shipping to be 100% sure that it arrives in time.

I actually found some M-Pro 7 LPX at Academy and was going to ask about it. Any opinions?

I highly recommend an Amazon Prime membership. It's like $39 for a college student. Free 2 day shipping on many (most?) items, and you can get almost anything on Amazon.

I have had great success with Break free, but have also uses a little high temp grease on a few contact points (carrier rails, right side of gas key, left side of can pin flat, and can pin channel).

Next time a frog lube bottle breaks, just scoop up the gel and put it in a can. A peanut can, a baby food jar, a chip dip tub (sour cream), anything. It's a cream anyway. As long as it stays covered and relatively airtight, I can;t see where you should've thrown it out.

However, I'd just use a little RemOil until the frog lube came in. This time, get an 8oz tub. They don;t break.

I've been doing some experiments on my rifle barrels. So far the jury is still out, but preliminary findings are that Frog Lube does well on carbon and lead fouling but poorly on copper. So....if I have to "wash" my bores with Montana Extreme, or Butch's, or Eliminator, or whatever, that pretty much takes care of any Frog Lube "coating" inside the bore anyway.

The best I've found so far for cheap is a quart of Mobil 1 ATF and a quart of Marvel Mystery oil. Put a half pint of each in a couple common squeeze bottles, if things get gummed up for any reason one flushes over a shallow small pan for environmental reasons, with the Mystery oil . If things get dry, or when reassembling after a strip cleaning one drenches the bolt or major moving parts on non ARs, with the Synthetic ATF then letting them drip off into said pan if you have one otherwise a spread rag is a field expedient for either treatment.About 5 minutes the atf will drip off to keep from getting messy if one cares about such things and I am a diesel mechanic. I have friends in SF currently and other civilian operators that have agreed this is the bullet proof field (as in base camp) supportable system. Although some greases are better than others and if you apply them just so they work well the old debris boogeyman is the joker. In the drench system using the solvent Mystrey oil to flush with little stripping other than working the action to keep it running the synthetic Mobil One LIGHT Oil ATF won't easily be washed away by the Marvel squirt, but the fouling will.
Saying this I want to share that I was taught by Vietnam SOF to degrease the rifles and pistols (ARs especially) totally with a shaving brush and toothbrush and lightly drench with Dryslide ,and let dry. The illuminati said this system worked in that red Vietnamese dust and mine thus treated allways did. Only under world class carbine trainers for the last 10 years or so have I questioned my lubrication practices which by them included the spectrum of the latest and greatest grease applied after cleaning the gun with CLP.
Trust me a couple squeeze bottles of the Red Mysterey Oil original formula and one of Mobil One ATF with lots of rags and a tooth brush in you bag or box and you will be set.

It spilled out onto a dirty floor, and I didn't want to be using dirty frog lube in my gun. There wasn't much left, but enough that I hadn't replenished my supply yet.

Try some blue goop. It's all I use any more. It's really heat resistant and anti marring. Google it. If interested shoot me an address and I'll pouch up some for you and send you some. I use a q-tip and wipe it on very sparingly. We use it in the mine for anything that touches acid that you want to unbolt. Works wonders on stainless steel I even swab by bore and patch out most of it
