I keep a Mossberg 500 for self defense. I keep a 18" "home defense" barrel on it. I have already been told you should not fire buckshot thru a fully rifled barrel but be I want to make sure. It would be super cool to keep a couple slugs for longer range shots.

there's nothing stopping you from using rifled slugs (designed for a smoothbore) with your current barrel. conversely, as you've heard, shot and rifled barrels really don't work out well together.
as far as i'm concerned, you only need a rifled barrel if you REALLY want to reach out and touch a deer. there's plenty of range to be had from regular old rifled slugs.
there are plenty of people here who keep slugs in their smoothbore hd guns.
of course, none of this addresses the question of how longer range shots fit into your definition of home defense/self defense, but that's a whole nother kettle

When I say long ranges I mean 30-50 yards. Home defense can mean different things to different people. For me it means keeping preditors out of my house. Not just the two legged kind either. We have a couple back bears in our area. Not that I plan on killing a bear but if it came to it I would. I can imagin shooting a bear off my porch. In a case like that I would like the follow up shots to be as accurate as possible.

If your shooting a bear off your porch rotate slugs with 00 buck just in case you miss with the slug. You might want to use the 3 inch magnum or 2 3/4 if you want to increase magazine capacity. IMHO I would keep a rifle handy and nearby, preferably lever action in a heavier caliber.

Ya I just sold the lever gun your talking about. I've been in the house for about a year and a half no trouble so far. I don't here about many "problem" bears so for now I think two legged preditors are my main concern. I will stay will the cylinder boar home defense barrel.

Buck shot and the rifled barrel do not go well together. I've tried it personally and man what a spread! As far a distance w/ slugs you can get 100+ yards easily w slugs and a rifled barrel. If you have rifled slugs and a smooth bore you can still get 50 to 70 yards, but that takes finding what slugs shoot the best out of your particular shot gun.

If memory servs the 500 18" barrel is a fixed cyld bore. She'll fire smoothbore slugs ok, I might even suggest Brenneke slugs.
Anyhow as an option to a rifled barrel you can get a vent-rib that takes screw-in chokes. Safe to fire the same slugs with the proper choke. And you can get anything from skeet to Turkey chokes, even a rifled choke that basicaly will let you shoot sabots.
