I need a belt and holster to lug the Redhawk around on a hunt in a few months so I ordered a Galco 1-3/4" belt from Midway and a holster from Galco. I also ordered a pair of ammunition "pouches" but they're on back order and won't be here for a few weeks. Anyway, great fit/finish, nice thick leather ... lot's to like with this open carry set up. The holster can be worn as a cross-draw too.

HorseSoldier, maybe these two photos will do a better job than me at explaining the two carry modes. I'm really impressed by the quality of the leather.

Added in edit: Sorry, I think you mean the loop behind the hammer ... if so, then it snaps down and doesn't rotate.

that looks great!

I love my 4" Redhawk.

Post some picks of the ammo carriers whenever you get them.

Me too. :)

Here's a "stock" photo of Galco's ammunition carriers (front and back) but I'll certainly take some better photos when I get them. I figured two would be enough but I can always add more.

Dr. Rob, thanks ... this is my first Galco rig but if it performs as good as it looks it won't be my last.

:)

Great looking rig! I am trying to find the same set up for my Ruger Alaskan. Does the belt fit the normal 'blue' jeans? My other question is, does the rig hold the butt of the revolver in close to the body or does it let the butt stick out?

batmann, the belt is 1-3/4" wide and almost 1/4" (0.225") thick but it does fit (just) through the loops on my Dockers jeans. The butt of the revolver is held close to the body which I prefer. It really is a nice rig and the 1/4" thick belt is impressive. I'm going to order the same holster for my 629 and Python also with 4" barrels.

Hope this helps.
:)

Thanks 1858--- it is a very nice outfit and exactly what I am looking for.

Nice looking belt and holster.

Batmann don't know if you've checked out simplyrugged holsters or not but I have there sourdough and belt for my Alaskan and it's by far the best investment in leather I have ever made. It doesn't have the strap but I can attest it doesn't need the strap for a good positive retention of the gun. I went to it for CC this past winter and the holster and belt worked great, sadly for me the Alaskan is just too damn big for CC during the summer.

Do you wear the belt through your belt loops, or as a separate gun belt?

Your question is probably directed to batmann but for what it's worth, I've never worn a belt/holster/revolver combination. A far more experienced friend told me to wear it as a separate belt unless I want to end up with my pants around my ankles. :D

That speedloader pouch is a good idea and cheap too!! The ammunition holders from Galco are kind of pricey.

No, I'd meant to ask you.:)

I hiked around with a 4" 629 on a heavy and wide belt through my belt loops for a few miles as an experiment. My pants were fine, but I ended up with a sore neck on the gun side the next day. I'm still not sure if it was the gun, or a coincidence. I think the weight imbalance on my hips caused it, though.

A separate gunbelt does feel better. The gun just doesn't draw as well.

So are you saying that I should buy another Redhawk and holster to balance out the load? If you have a medical degree perhaps I can use this argument to convince the wife that I do actually need a SRH Alaskan!! :D

You make a good point though .... a balanced load is a lot easier on the body.

:)

Thanks PhrankKastle, I do indeed have a Simply Rugged holster for my Alaskan and, like you, I carry it in the fall/winter/early spring when I can wear a coat. I was thinking more along the lines of a 'field' holster for use with a seperate belt for hiking on my propery in the summer time. I was thinking it might be easier to put on and take off.
PS---How do you like you Alaskan?

I love my Alaskan I have the .44 I am amazed at how it handles the heavy loads in a 2.5" bbl. I've put Buffalo Bore and Garrett Hammerheads thru it and while recoil is stout I can still keep all inside the 9 ring rapid fire. My friend finds it more controllable than his 4" 629 with the same loads.

As for CC with Gold Dots it's a real pussycat to shoot IMO

My experence with my .44M Alaskan echos yours. I find is balances better and handles recoil with 'heavy' loads better than my Smiths. I have some 320 HC gas check handloads that are equal to or slightly better the Garrett 'Hammerheads' and while not pleasant, are centainly easier to control in my Alasakan. They are, in fact, like the Garrett loads, to long for the Smith cylinder.

I have found the following products to be useful with hunting rigs:

Tuff Products makes a pretty comprehensive line of strip speedloaders and pouches- the strip loaders are available for many handgun cartridges, including 44, 475, 500 S&W, etc., and a number of rifle cartridges including 30/30 thru 458, etc. Reasonable prices.

Perry makes a superb suspender which uses a unique belt clip (ABS/Nylon or such), U-shaped and grabs the belt from the bottom, never slipping off. Wide elastic fabric, 2" or so- many colors including camo and hunter orange.

The Galco ammunition carriers arrived the other day and while they appear to be very well made, they're not quite what I expected.

I should have looked more closely at the images on Galco's web site. Is this a good design? What am I missing here? I hadn't realized that there wasn't a dedicated loop on the back of the carrier as is shown on the Galco 500 mag carrier below.

ArmedBear, thanks very much for the suggestion re the Cabela's blackpowder cylinder pouches ... a pair arrived today and they're excellent. I couldn't find any speedloader pouches in brown leather so these cylinder pouches are a real find. They're shown in the photo below with HKS .44 Magnum speed loaders which fit perfectly. Now I can carry 12 spare rounds for the Redhawk plus 12 spare rounds for the Marlin (or the Redhawk). That's 40 rounds total (6 in the Ruger and 10 in the Marlin) which should be sufficient.

I really like the Galco belts. When I first got mine, I was really impressed with the quality of the leather. I had never seen such a nice belt before.
