Buying a project rifle,M98 conversion that has Gartman Arms stamped on barrel, a local Mass. customizer. Does anybody have any information, good, bad,or ugly about their work? thanks.

John, I can only tell you a little bit. Gartman Arms has been in Plainville, MA all my life (50 years)

There is an old German guy who owns the place and his sign says custom deep hole drilling. He has quite an extensive collection of fairly rare firearms on his walls, but seems content to not sell them.

OVer the years I've heard a lot of stories about the shop, but have no opinions of my own, as it has never been open when I go there. You almost have to call for an appointment.

I understand the guy built some really good, competition Shutzenrifles in the past, and other good work. He has some class 3 stuff if I remember correctly, and he seems to mostly keep the business now just to have a place to go every day.

Haven't heard anything bad about him except he can be a little grumpy.

A friend of mine has a Gartman conversion in 22-250 that I once considered buying. I didn't find out much about the company except for several posts that were consistent with depicts comments (maybe I heard it from him, can't remember). The 22-250 was finally identified as a 1903 or 1903a3 with a nice walnut stock and Gartman's custom barrel. It shot just fine but I decided not to get into another caliber.

Anyway, the overall quality seemed fine. Don't think there would be much available in the way of spare parts, though.
