General Opinions on the Glock 23

MY glock 23 was my first handgun, and wouldn't have had it any other way. Some may say that the recoil is too heavy, I think that is up to the individual. The recoil was just fine. It's an all around good size for carry, not to big, not to small. I have well over 3k rounds through it, not a failure yet. If something happends, it's the first handgun I would go to. Not the most accurate gun I have, but accurate enough. All around it's got to be my favorite handgun (But I have yet to fully try out my sig...).

glock 23 and 17

hello fellow glock owners. I agree with you all. Most i like about it is that the options are limitless. I interchange barrels and mags (ofcourse) for different calibers..but i feel that the .40 is the best specially for carry.
There are lots of modifications i did on both...but havent tried that thumbrest...has any of you tried it yet? Gusto kong ilagay but im not sure if the investment is worth it...help!

I carry a Glock 23 in one of three methods depending on the required dress. I have a Milt Sparks VMII IWB, Galco Jackass Shoulder holster and a Galco ankle holster. I can carry my 23 all day long in any of these methods - strong side IWB is preferred.

I put 100+ rounds a month through my 23 shooting IDPA, 3-Gun, and other competitions I can myself into - with no problems or issues. It has eaten everything I have run through it and always goes bang when I need it to. The recoil is manageable and hits pretty much at point of aim.

Mike45ACP...you carry it in an Ankle Glove? I am going to give that a test fit. I carry my G26 like that all day long....interesting.

As for the G23, it was the Glock I have always wanted.....then I got it and man, I love it even more. Perfect size, great round capacity....just a solid piece and I have it in my regular carry rotation.

Besides, it has to keep my other Glocks company....

Be a little cautious w/glocks

Working in law enforcement, I have heard about how awesome and wonderful glocks are. My department issued duty gun is a glock 17, and my backup/off-duty is a 26. However, shortly after I graduated the academy, with only about 3500 rounds through the gun, the firing pin in my 17 had to be replaced because of wear and tear. A short time later, my 26 had to have the same replacement after only about 200 rounds  .

My department has issued glocks for years, and I have increasingly heard compaints from rookies and veteranos alike of issues with the gun not working properly. Some of that can be attributed to maintenance issues, but I take damn good care of my guns. I'm going to buy my own sig for duty use.

That being said, if your going to carry ccw seriously, make sure u can see ur sights and ur target in the dark, and always carry an extra mag. a small can of oc is a good idea in case u can't justify shooting, but need protection. a cell phone is a must!!!! as far as holsters, i prefer inside the pant or pocket because I feel self cautious Joe Citizen can see my pistola, even with a baggy shirt...

Sounds like operator error. Are you in the habit of pulling back and releasing the firing pin while the slide is off the gun? That beats the crap out of both the pin and the pin block safety.

Wow, sorry to hear about the problems that you guys seems to be having with the glocks. I wonder if you got a bad batch? My best friend's department issues them glocks and they love them. You can see from my tag that I have 3 and they go through hundreds of rounds per month and I have had no issues. Go figure.

Then again, I love going fishing here at the beach especially catching by trolls

as far as messing with the firing pin while the slide is off, negative. i don't play with parts or anything like that while the weapon is disassembled. my life depends on the piece and i don't mess with parts and play with stuff. the only time i operate the firearms other than at the range or cleaning is occasional dry firing(which glock says is okay) and press checks.

as far as a bad batch goes, my agency issues 21's and 17's, as well as sub-compact versions of both of those to detectives and administrators. we have issued both for sometime, and have heard those complaints from deputies with all guns from different batches. i think it's a decreasing quality issue to keep up with demand.

I don't have a G23, but I have had a G22 for many years. Total reliability, easy to maintain, and lightweight. Without a doubt my go-to pistol for self defense. Although I have grown to enjoy my Colt Series 70 .45 more for target practice. Gotta' love the 1911 trigger!

Hey Cosmo, what are you doing with a plastic fantastic?

Great gun, though the recoil began to irritate me after a while so I got a Glock 19 instead. I like the 23, but for me the 9mm is more accurate and faster to shoot. You can't go wrong with a 23 unless you are recoil sensitive........like me.

It's been awhile since I shot the .40 Glocks, and the recoil wasn't too bad...but I could not shoot them accurately at all. The G19, on the other hand, I can shoot it very well. I have heard some complain about the unsupported chambers on .40 cal Glocks, but I've heard very few real k-boom events, especially given how popular they are.
I'm conidering trading my G19 for a G23 for the caliber upgrade, but I'll have to see how well I can shoot them now.
I say, try the G23. If you don't shoot it well, get the G19. They are both great guns.

I’ve owned Glocks for over ten years. I had a stainless Colt Combat Commander. It was a nice looking gun but it would get at least one jam per session when I would go shooting. I also had a Ruger .44 mag in stainless. I traded them, plus cash, for two Glock 22s. They both worked flawlessly. I traded one for a Glock 27 when they first came out and later traded the other for a Glock 23.

When I bought the Glock 22s they were a replacement for the Colt Commander. The Glock 22 is as small and lighter than the Commander. If you are in a shooting the police will want your weapon for evidence. You now need a replacement that is similar to the handgun you have been using in case the bad guy had friends or relatives that don’t like the idea you shot their buddy.

I wanted the new Glock 23 so I could mount a light on the rail. I put an M3 light on it. All my Glocks have had green Memrolite night sights. The Glock 23 has home defense duty. It has the M3 light, Meprolite night sights and a G22 mag with a +2 extension. It looks like a SWAT entry pistol. That is 18 rounds, before a reload, for home invaders. I also have a SureFire C2 to identify the target and help them see the light – even after they close their eyes. I also bought an Advantage Arms .22 lr slide. I bought a brick of Remington 40 grain Golden bullets and a brick of CCI Blazer. I have not had a chance to shoot it yet. The Glock 23 fits my hand. When I pick a target, close my eyes, point the Glock and open my eyes the gun’s sights are level. They may be off target but the gun is not tilted up or down. I am really looking forward to shooting the .22 conversion. I carry the Glock 27 for CCW with an inside the pants Kydex holster. I wear the Glock 23 in a belt holster.

I have had two .44 magnums, a .41 magnum, a .357 magnum, a .45 auto, some .40 S&W, a 9mm and the worst of all; a .38 special S&W snubbie. The recoil of a .40 does not seem bad. :D

Hey Cosmo, what are you doing with a plastic fantastic?

That was just a little torture testing to make sure the new sights and springs were working well. I just ended up torturing my wrists. I even shot a bunch out of left hand, letting it whip back to ensure limp wristing would not pose a problem. As I suspected it did not. Nice piece.

I have carried a Glock 23 since I first got my permit three years ago. I carry it in a Fobus paddle holster. The loads I use are 165-grain Federal Hydra Shocks, though I don't have a real particular reason for using them. I've just heard good things about them. I carry a spare mag in a Fobus single mag pouch.

I've found the set up to be very comfortable. It's light and sits well on me. I usually conceal under just a T-shirt in the summer. It's also very pleasant to shoot. The Glock 23 has worked well for me.

I have 6 Glocks at the present timew and am looking for another. 2 of the ones that I have now are G23's and that is what I carry daily. As far as I'm concerned, it is the perfect carry weapon. I have a hard time understanding why some say that I has too much recoil. My wife weighs about 115 and is 5' 4" tall. She loves my 23's and shoots them well. But then she also shoots my 10mm well....

19 and 23

i have quite a few glocks and my favorites are the 19 and 23. they are my favorite glock twins. train alot with the 19 for the price of ammo and practice with the 23 for felt recoil because of carry. then throw in the advantage arms conversions on the glocks and what a blast for the bucks.

5'11" 245 lb. that means love handles. carry right side at 4 or 6 oclock.
rig is Galco QS224H $89.00 havana brown on their site, carry one extra mag on rare occasion its Galco SMC24 tan $33.95 on their site. love the set up the only problem to date is the extended mag release had to go. got tired of it poking me in the side.

Good luck!
:D

i got a g23 very recently. i use a fobus paddle when carrying in the woods, and while walking trails where i might see people i use a cheapie uncle mikes nylon generic holster that i use as an IWB.

it was a used gen 2 that i put hougue slip-on grips on. it has quickly become my favorite glock. in my opinion it is very easy to conceal, carry, and shoot well. Others have said it but i'll reiterate. it is my favorite glock on the market!

lone wolf industries makes a g23 9mm barrel that you can purchase for around 90 dollars so you can shoot 9mm (it'll run lead as well) that i will be purchasing soon. might also be worth looking into.

Most folks make the mistake of using lighter bullets in .40. This is where the harsh recoil comes from. Try some 180 gr bullets if you want softer recoil.

I own a G23 and tried it out first using a 155 grain load. The recoil was so heavy it broke my grip on the pistol. I have fired .44 Magnum revolvers that were not so difficult to control.

I put a Hogue grip sleeve and a Hartz recoil reduction recoil spring rod in the gun. The next time I fired my G23, the recoil was not nearly as bad. However, at that time I did not know there were big differences between 155 and 180 grain loads. I don't remember what ammo I used the second time, so it could have been the ammunition rather than the modifications that made the difference.

I do regard it to be a problem that a G23 is too hard to control with the hotter loads. It is the hotter loads that give the .40 greater stopping power over the 9mm. IMHO, if you have to use milder loads so you can control the G23, then the G23 offers no improvement over the G19.

I plan to try my G23 with 155 grain loads again to see if the Hogue grip and Hartz recoil rod really make a difference. If the gun is still difficult to control, I will trade it in on .40 with less recoil. From what I have read the Beretta Storm is a very soft-shooting .40, due to the rotating barrel locking system it has.

I own the Glock 23 and love it! I had a Ruger SR9 for a while, though it started to seem too whimpy to me. In order to take someone out with a 9mm, you will have to shoot 2-4 times in the right spots. My friend who used them in the army told me that he was very happy when they switched from 9mm to .40 cal. - 2 rounds with JHP would put the man down.

I don't have a problem AT ALL with the re-coil of this gun!~ But one person to the next have different ways of holding a gun. To me, there is only ONE good way to hold the gun: Watch ---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6QxRRcYlak&NR=1
Yes, music is loud, but just watch it and absorb it. Try it for yourself the next time you go to the gun range.

If you want to carry this pistol concealed, I found two great carry holsters to work for me...

I carry a 23 with a Crimosn Trace grip in a Bianchi Carrylok pancake holster everyday. It's pretty concealable in all seasons, even under just a tshirt I've never been self concious about it being seen. It shoots great, accurate and comfortable. Recoil is not as bad as I hear everybody say it is, if you have a good strong grip it's easily managable. Overall probably one of my 3 favorite guns I own.

Good topic. My G23 has eaten every thing from reloads to +p you name it. Never flinched 2000 rounds just breaks it in. Everything is still as tight as if it was new, seriously. 13 rounds; snag free edges; the option of larger capacity factory magazines; 40 cal just sounds nice when other people are shooting 9s. Most of my ammo is either WWB for the range or Speer GoldDots and Winchester Ranger ammo for SD. Holster is by a company named Brommeland(i never heard of them it was a gift. i love it), OWB custom fit leather. When I show people they think i loop my gun threw my belt its super concealable. But am looking at either a Glock factory holster and mag pouch, or a Fobus setup. Future plans include a pair of night sites and a Hogue rubber grip, As for shootability its a bit much for me in rapid fire i shoot 9mm and .45 more consistently.(pretty sure the sites and grip would improve my performance) Wont ever trade it in I'm to attached, he's "THE G MAN".
