Hi, It's been a while since we discussed this and I disremember what the correct information is.

I like to use gun scrubber to blow out receivers, etc but at $7 a can it is kind of hard on my miserly heart when I see similar looking cans of brake cleaner etc at the auto parts store for a couple bucks.

Is there one of these cheaper products that is essentially the same as Gun Scrubber? Thanks!

Yep - brake parts cleaner is virtually identical to Gun Scrubber in chemical make-up, and is about one-fifth of the price. However, remember that BPC and GS both contain chemicals harmful to humans, so if you use them, do so in a well-ventilated area (preferably outside), and minimize skin contact through the use of rubber gloves, etc.

All brake cleaners are not created equal. Some are no doubt safe for guns and gun finishes. I would put a bet on the honda brand stuff I used to use to clean my dirtbike. But I used some generic brake cleaner on my dad's 870 express and it instantly melted the finish off. It's a good thing it wasn't a nice gun.

Non-chlorinated brakecleen walmart cheepy brand 1.89 for supersized can works great even on polymer cleans my hk and springfield xd just fine along with other guns

carb cleaner also works good but make sure to test a spot on the finish before using it on the whole gun(any cleaner for that matter). if you want to live on the edge starting fluid is another option but it is very risky :)
