Ghetto loading

25 years ago when young, foolhardy, and poor, I began handloading on a shoestring. Used no commercially made hand loading gear at first. A 22 case for powder measure, hand crimping with a screw driver. No resizing of the lightly loaded ( I hoped !!!) cases. Just threw them away when they got tight in the .38 which took 3 or 4 reloads. The first gear I broke down and bought was the lee hand priming tool due to ammo failing to fire with the rowel method.

I survived as did the gun but no way would I think of doing that or advising anyone else to do so now that I better understand the risks. I may be no less foolish but am at least not so poor as to be unable to afford a simple press and scales nor would I trust one worn out paperback from a used Book store on the amount of unique in a 22 short case. Still use old brass for measures but check repeatedly against the scale.

Still have and prefer the hand priming tool.

I do have a Lee loader that i still use once in a while. Although i do use scales to measure and check length with a set of calipers. Wear eye and ear protection. I still wear eye protection when using my presses too.

I grew up around reloading equipment. My father and many of his friends reloaded. As kids will do, we experimented with setting primers off for the fun of it. I can tell you that if you tape a primer to the face of a hammer and set it off, it is loud and safety glasses are a good idea.

So, I too get tired of the breathless responses that the world will end if you set off a primer. It won't.

My contribution to this thread is that you can neck size cartridges with a hole drilled into a steel plate. The hole needs to be chamfered & fairly smooth. Use some lube. Tap the cartridge in with a mallet and tap it out with a long pin punch.

A friend of mine is from Africa, where he tells me it is illegal to reload ammunition. If the time came in our country, when reloading supplies and equipment were confiscated, only those with "improvised reloading" mentalities will be reloading. I love to see free thinkers, that are not imprisoned by their own fears.

Just FYI - most folks here are not seeking vocabulary lessons.
If that is aimed at me I'm not trying to correct you. I just thought it was a good idea & point out it was a die. I make a lot of my own tools & applaud others for the same.
