:banghead:Found this line of the story to be a bit annoying:

"...One man brought in a Soviet-era semiautomatic carbine.

"If that got into the wrong hands of gangbangers, they could kill several people within minutes,"
...."

Story here

Wondering what you folks think...?

He could kill "several people in several minutes" with a single shot blackpowder rifle if he wanted.

Personally I think the best gifts for guns would be to get a decent holster or a gift card to the local gunsmith for an action job.

wow they had those 5 hundred and something guns destroyed that should be a crime:eek: and it said they handed over two hand grenades?

"could kill several people within minutes,"

One of the larger homocides in the US was the result of a gasoline can being thrown into a bar. Where is the outrage on not having background checks and delays on purchases of 100s of gallons of gasoline at a time? Just look at the changes in the fertilizer world after OKC.

One man brought in a Soviet-era semiautomatic carbine.

Probably an SKS, which I believe are legal in California. Funny how they make it sound as if its an oddity and worthy of a big fuss.

"If that got into the wrong hands of gangbangers"

Is there such a thing as the "right hands of gangbangers"?

Interesting that the hand grenades drew less outcry than the semiautomatic carbine. How big of a hand grenade problem does Compton have?

"....they could kill several people within minutes!"

hahaha. Thanks for the morning laugh! Some people.... I just don't know..

Deplorable

Asking families to deprive themselves of the means/materiel to defend their households when they live in a dangerous town just so they can put food on their tables...DESPICABLE!!! This isn't social action...this is a state-run pawn shop. Guns are one of the first things to be sold when one hits hard times as they are the most expendable (more expendable than a car anyway) and valuable things in the house. Only difference is that they were sold to the state instead of Jack's Pawn & Gun. Really, does any reasonable person really believe a criminal, who makes his living by means of violence, would sell his firearm to the state for $100 that will be gone in a week? All they did here was take guns from people who make an otherwise honest (but meager) living and left guns in the hands of people who feed off of the honest citizens of that city. Only now, criminals will be able to attack with greater confidence that they will face no armed resistance. God help that town.

So could a flintlock musket. Someone is clueless...

Rate of fire of a Brown Bess was around three .75 caliber rounds every minute, IIRC.

If you can turn in a couple hand grenades without anyone asking questions, what's to say some crackhead didn't turn in a murder weapon, have it (evidence) destroyed at the expense of the taxpayers, and get $100 to boot?

WHOA *** Hand Grenades?!

Ok I didn't read the article but from the comments here it seems like some people turned in Fudging HAND GRENADES!!!

WTFF!!

1. Where in hell did they get them?
2. ***!?!?
3. Isn't that a DD, which should land you +10 years in jail without papers?

(If #3 is yes, go to #4)

4. Ok so apparently federal doesn't matter that day on that line, so could I shoot someone that day, walk to the buy back program and give them a bloody firearm without questions?

5. I never got these gun buybacks, do they check the lands and grooves on each firearm to make sure they arn't linked to a murder or assault? Do they make you show gov ID when you turn in a gun? If they don't this is the biggest exercise in futility ever. Yea once a year if you commit a murder with a gun just give it to the police IN PERSON, they will pay you and distroy the evidence so you can never be charged. Sounds alot like amnesty day for murders in that city. . . glad I dont live their.

Ok I just read the article after the grenade comments I had too, ok three things bothered me in this article. Did anyone else catch these?

"Authorities said 590 guns and two hand grenades "

- LoL Ok apparently two had been turned in, where these two dropped off by the same person or by two different people?? Eathier way, thats just damn bad.

"One guy said he had just got laid off from his job," Woods said. "He turned in five guns and said it would really help him to put food on the family's table."

I feel like this guy got robbed by his city, he turned in 5 guns and got what $500 for them? If all 5 where "Assault rifles" that would be $1000 MAX. I have a very good feeling this guy could have gotten more money if he would have sold to a private citizen or a gun store than at this buy back program. Poor guy is worried about putting food on the table and these bastards could have robbed him of a couple hundred to maybe thousands of dollars. We'll never know for sure unless he told us the make, model, and condition of each gun.

"The drive also has yielded antique weapons."

- GOD DAMNIT Thats the worst line in their, know why???

Because all those unique antique firearms are all probably gonna be melted down now . . .
I'm hoping pro 2nd amnd cops save as many antique firearms as they can. Nothing worst that seeing something thats never going to be produced again be melted down for scrap . . . damn it
Rant off

I am curious what the antique guns were. That is the thing that hurts me. The guy that traded in 5 guns was either stupid or smart. If people don't have the brains to get a fair price for their stuff they don't deserve it.
I kind of wish they would have some gun trade in program down here I have a couple of guns that aren't worth much of anything would love to sell them and buy some ammo.

Ans two all you guys shaking your head they are nickel plated spanish revolvers that aren't safe to fire.

There are comments on some news stories that they were smoke grenades, not hand grenades.

This is a comment on Newsvine ( http://beefviper.newsvine.com/_news...f-residents-trade-guns-for-groceries#comments )regarding an MSNBC story ( http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28099745/ ):

According to a memo just distributed to some of our local law enforcement offices; the two grenades that were turned in were actually smoke grenades used as signaling devices. They do not explode, instead they spew out bright red smoke. In some states they can be bought in Army Surplus stores. They are not illegal except maybe in California.

I was wondering about the hand grenades myself. I was thinking they were probably the practice grenades that you can buy at army surplus stores. I was thinking,"Wow, I can take my $20 worth of grenades that I bought as a kid, and turn them into $600 (+/- a few) worth of gift cards." But alas I didn't think about active smoke grenades.

One question for anybody in the know. Are the gift cards donated by the retailers, or do our tax dollars pay for them? I know that Target is extremely anti-gun, and I suspect that Best Buys is as well. The grocery store I have no knowledge about (they're not in my area).

The more I think about it, what's the likelihood these guns were STOLEN? Some guns wouldn't bring much more than that at a pawn shop, but then they run the risk of being traced.

So in review, these buybacks:

-provide a way to dispose of evidence, no questions asked

-turn a quick and guaranteed profit for stolen property with no fear of prosecution

-take advantage of those undecated about the value of their firearm

-don't actually get guns off the street (unless they're linked to a crime), but instead out of the hands of law-abiding citizens

I read in another thread what would be a great idea... scrounge the gunshops looking for "junk" that they'd throw away (Broken, bent, damaged, heat warped, etc) and buy it off them for scrap... Turn them in at each of the buy backs... Some of them are giving $100 best buy gift cards.. Think of the profit you could make

"If that got into the wrong hands of gangbangers, they could kill several people within minutes,"
...."
If my car got into the wrong hands of a drunk driver, they could kill several people within minutes.

If my cell phone got into the wrong hands of terrorists, they could plan an event that would kill several people within minutes.

If my chain saw got into the wrong hands of a psycho murderer, they could kill several people within minutes.

Statements like the above have always confused me. Guns aren't some secret doomsday death ray that has a chance of "falling into the wrong hands". They're a tool that, like any other tool, can be misused by the immoral and the stupid, but in general is used for good by normal people.

Authorities said 590 guns and two hand grenades were handed in during the last weekend in November
Damn! Not just one, but two hand grenades. I'd like to take some of those inert grenades from the surplus store and patch the hole in the bottom, then trade them in for $100 gift cards! lol.

I wish they would have one here too. I would go cherry pick the line of people and offer cash for the good guns!

If they were truly worried about "houses getting burgled and guns stolen" then why don't they donate money for gun safes to poor residents?

No kidding! I'm sure that most of those people would rather have $100 cash for grandpa's 1911 than a $100 gift card ;)

The 'antiques' they were getting could well have been folk turning in ropey Mosin Nagants at a profit. It's what I'd do, if I didn't object to destroying old and limited resources.
