Glass to Stiffen Stock - Fail

Well that was disappointing! Pieced together savage rifle with a factory tupperware stock had a ton of flex. A similar action was pillar and glassed bedded to this stock. I removed / re-glassed it for the new action, but major stock flex. Action bedding was w/ accraglass. I decided to fill the forearm w/ bedding thinking that would stiffen it up. Didn’t have enough accraglass, so I added some Score High 2000 to a recent midway purchase. I removed the barreled action from the stock this evening, cleaned everything up and reassembled. The stock still has a ton of flex! It’s nicely floated… as long as there’s no pressure on the forend…. Complete waste of time & money.

At school, I have seen a few guys cut 2 strips of carbon fiber or fiberglass about 1/2"x1/4"xforearm length, cut a channel and glass them into the forearm.

Here's the offender. The lighter colered 'gray' in front of the lug is accraglass that was milled out post bedding. All the dark black in the forearm is the 2000 glass. I think I'll tuck tail and call Kevin Rayhill to see if he has a money saver sitting on the shelf that needs a home; probably doesn't...

A couple steel rods glassed in might do the trick.

I thought about milling the stock to fit some threaded rod and glassing that in. I'm sure that would have helped, but I don't know if it would have been a 100% fix. It was a good learning experience and I'm still glad I gave it a shot. I tend to lean more from my failures than my accidental successes.

Composite arrow shafts are much lighter and stiffer than steel rod. Pretty common to glass them into a stock to stiffen it up.

Or, if it's too thin for a hole and stiff dowel type job, you could glass some fabric to the inside of the barrel channel after opening it up a bit more.

What kind of arrow? I recently got back into bows (like last few weeks) and arrows seem to be as flimsly as ever. I bought some Beman rated for 40# and some rated for 70#. Both seem pretty flexable. Even my old alum arrows are flexable, 2112, 2212, 2312 & 2512.

The arrows will flex in the air because there is nothing around it, if you grab it at the ends it flexes a lot but if you grab it in the middle and try to flex it it will not bend. I like the idea of an arrow, it will reduce flex in all directions where a slab of fiberglass will only limit it i one direction. Go down to the local bow shop and they will probably give you a 20 inch chunk from somebody's busted arrow.

I've had similar problems with Savage and Remington factory plastic stocks. I like to run some spring steel down into the bedding job. I cut mine from cattle panels.

Me, If it were to bother me - not caring too much about reasonable weight increases, I'd lay in cut down thin walled stainless or maybe even copper tube of a matched diameter as a liner with at least 6 attachment points.
