Ok. Here's the story.

Im a long-time Glock hater, simply because of aesthetics. However, I deeply respect the ergonomics, reliability, functionability, engineering, and above all, the Austrian origin of Glocks. (Fiance' is Austrian... not American) After many many years of making fun of Glocks, I have decided to purchase one, because it appears to meet all the standards I need for a great value and reliable, lightweight firearm.

Now that it is getting to be finally warmer weather here in NY, I want to get an alternate CCW for when im not at work. At work, of course, I have to dress nice, wear trousers, etc and typically carry a S&W 637 on an ankle holster. I want something else for when im not at work, wearing shorts, relaxing, etc. A lot of people here on THR apparently use the IWB holsters that are available... (I had no idea how popular these were until someone ran a poll a few weeks back)

So now, I started looked for a good gun to CCW IWB. I would prefer something in .40, because I plan to start reloading this caliber shortly, and this is the majority of what I shoot in other firearms. I chose the Glock 27. Here's where my questions come in.

Do any of you CCW a Glock 27, and can comment on the fit/feel of this? Is it uncomfortable? Would a 23 be preferable? Ive heard complaints about the width of Glocks, of course, and I assume I would carry it at 4 o'clock, but, having no experience with CCW in this area of my anatomy, dont know much about it. (I know the "Slimline" .45 is available, but it doesnt meet many of my other criteria and so is removed as a possible option.) Another thing im concerned about is whether it might be *too* small... whether i might have a difficult time reaching it if SHTF and the grip is so small. Round capacity is a null issue since here in NY, 10 rounds is the max anyway.

Unless (and here im really ignorant) there exist "pre-ban" Glock magazines of greater than 10 rounds. But that would be just for fun, not to carry.

Im purchasing one friday and my best friend has carried his for a few years now. He has had to draw it twice and had no problems either time. He just bought a 32 round mag for it for fun. It looks silly in the tiny gun. It will also take the Model 22 (15 rnds) and the 23 (13 rnds) mags as well.

Don't know about the 27 but my 23 is my "go to" gun. I seldom carry IWB, but any good OWB leather holster, worn slightly behind my hip, makes the 23 very comfortable. The 23 has a rapid muzzle flip but comes back quicky and is easier to double -tap than my National Match. I use a 10 round mag and carry one extra. If I can't do it in 20 rounds, it ain't my day.

My dear, sweet, lovely Glock 27

I bought a 27 soon after they debuted. Out of the box, it is the most accurate firearm I own. Never a malfunction, just simple, elegant perfection (I carry a picture of it in my wallet, is that so wrong?). Seriously though, it's a great gun and I'm sure you will like it. I am 6'1" and slightly gravitationally challanged (I'M A BIG FAT GUY!!OK??:cuss: ) I don't carry concealed most of the time, but during Hurricane Wilma and the aftermath, I packed that 27 on my 4 o'clock with a spare mag in a Kydex Fobus holster for about 12 hours a day very comfortably. Yes, the grip is an issue, but easily solved with a Pearse grip extender, part#PG-26. Now that thing kind of jumps into my hand like Luke Skywalker's light saber. May the force be with you!

On occasion, I've been known to carry a G27 on my left ankle and even more rarely a G23 in a Spark's Summer Special in the small of my back.
When I do so, it works for me. I'm 6'1" and 190lbs.

Can anyone explain what I would need to do to increase chamber support? Im worried about the reputed failures of Glocks with handloading because they have poor support.

I don't have the G27 or G23 but I do CCW a G33 and used to carry a G19.

Compact frame glock conceal pretty decently IWB, but I've had better success with the subcompact (minus the finger extension) I find that its the length of the grip on the compact and +1 extensions that cause the gun to print.

I've had great success at ankle carry as well as pocket carry w/holster with the subcompact glocks.

Not at all, fits in my jeans pocket, but won't fit in the pockets of one of my coats which is a big deal for me. The length of the handle was perfect, wouldn't want extensions, but the slide is an inch too long for my needs.

Yes, it feels fine, is the only gun I've genuinely forgotten I was carrying.

If you're gonna shoot it alot, or have narrow fingers, I'd suggest the 23. Problem is my finger gets wedged in front of the grip but behind the trigger guard when shooting repeatedly, so the gun recoils on me from two directions.

Width, to me, looks kinda wide, but the width has never been the part that got mine noticed. So I guess that means it's narrow enough to conceal.

If you have a problem drawing a subcompact G27; then get the mag extension. The G27 & G23 are great guns...but it sounds like you should look into the G23 because of your concern of fit/feel.

I'd recommend looking into the .45GAP series; the width is the same as a G26-27 frame.

Welcome to the Dark Side.

Today, I put the deposit down on the 27.

I played around with the 23, and I actually preferred the 23 in regards to the handle, the fact that it actually had an accessory rail, and all. However, the magazine release was absolutely sweet in the 27 (it shot right out!) and miserable in the 23 (sort of grinding to a halt half the time, slowly falling the rest.) Trying it out, it seemed like the width wasnt a big deal.

The gun at the gun store said they have never ever had an issue with a round exploding and damaging a Glock due to weak chamber support. He said he's been reloading personally longer than ive been alive (and im no longer a young buck) and he's never had a concern in his Glocks even with .40 cal.

Im having them install the adjustable sights and an extended slide release because the standard one really is microscopic.

It may not be the mag release button, but maybe the magazine. I have some mags that easily slip out and some that need a quick nudge.

Great choice on the G27.

I carry both. Well, not exactly but this is my CCW piece. A G23 with the grip chopped to a G27. I have the balance and sight radius of the G23 with the concealability of the 27. I don't know how it could get any better. My wife carries the same thing only a G19 chopped to a 26.

I never cared for my G27. I felt like the grip was a bit short for my taste. I ended up placing the finger extensions on the mags only to find that it printed just a bit more ruining the concealment factor. The recoil is a bit more felt than the avg .40, but not uncontrollable by any means. The 27 is fat. If you have a heavier build then youll notice it more, especially IWB. A good holster will go a long way to fix the problem, but I always found that it felt like I was trying to hide a baseball IWB. I preface that by saying that I never bought a specific G27 holster to try.
I currently carry a commander length 1911, and find it to be the perfect width. Im 6'0 and 220. I tried the magazine sleeves that fill the gap between the bottom of longer mags and the base of the frame. This gave me plenty of grip but the gun was not nearly as accurate. I felt like it changed the point of aim. This mod also gives you more capacity. If I was to go pack to packing a glock .40 I would pick the 23. The pistol has never failed me, and its been rock solid, as far as reliability goes. YMMV

I own a G19, G26 and a G23. The G26 is much easier to conceal. It's the same as the 40 cal (G27) except it is a 9mil. Now having said that I can conceal my G19 and G23 which are a 9 mil and a 40 cal. But again my G26 (9mil) and the G27 (40 cal) will be easier to conceal due to the smaller size because they are subcompacts. I am not one of those people who ankle carry. I always IWB strong side (R) at about the 3:30 - 4:00 position right behind my hip. This works for me, but may not for you. Everyone is different. I would suggest that you puchase a very good gun belt and a very good holster. It will make alot of differnce. of course if you ankle carry a gun belt will not be needed. if I can answer any more questions, just let me know by PMing me. Good luck.
