In the shorter barrel 10 mm Glock 29 would you rather carry:

Double Tap
Bullet Weight: 135 Grains
Bullet Style: Nosler JHP

Ballistics Information (4.6" barrel):
Muzzle Velocity: 1600 fps
Muzzle Energy: 767 ft. lbs.

OR

Winchester Silvertip
Bullet Weight: 175 Grains
Bullet Style: Silvertip Hollow Point

Ballistics Information (barrel length unknown):
Muzzle Velocity: 1290 fps
Muzzle Energy: 649 ft. lbs.

Thoughts?

When I owned a G29, I bought it so that I would have a choice between concealed carry and woods carry. As such, I carried a load comparable to .40 S&W for the former and something considerably hotter for the latter.

My experience on the range with these two loads is as you'd expect. If forced to choose one round, I would go with 180 grains at around 1050 fps.

I guess it just depends on what you are carrying for. If I only carried mine for self defense I tend to agree with Devonai. I think the heavy loads at modest velocity are very controllable and give great penetration.

I most often use my 29 as an around the farm and in the woods gun therefore I most always carry the hotter 180 grain loads. I would love to carry the Silvertips, however, I have not seen any in a long time. My 29 in not my primary defensive carry gun, my 19 or 23 are. My 29 is for around the farm, camping, hiking, and hunting.

If I'm carrying the G20 or G29 it usually has Double Tap 200 gr loads at about 1300 fps. The 10mm is also my woods gun. The only reason for owning it is to carry heavy loads loaded hot.

For personal protection from human threats I carry a G19 or G43. If I were shooting 135 gr bullets I'd just stay with 9mm.

But since the 10mm is so versatile if I were carrying it for human threats any 165-180 gr load at or above 40 S&W speeds should be just as good as if they were fired from a 40 S&W.

I carry my G29 with 180 XTP over 10.5 gr Blue Dot. A fairly stout load for SD, but I live near a Natl forest with black bear, wolves, mountain lions and such. In the city I would carry something else.

In my 29SF a 150 JHP like these:
Corbon 150 JHP

Double Tap 150 JHP

Or the Barnes 140 Tac-XP

I handload and have replicated the velocity of a couple factory rounds pretty close*:
Glock 29 SF
Handload Barnes Tac-XP 140 gr. @ 1,190 fps / 440# KE
Corbon 150 JHP @ 1,231 fps / 505# KE*
Handload Nosler 150 JHP @ 1,226 fps / 501# KE*
Hornady 155 XTP @ 1,256 fps / 543# KE*
Handload 155 XTP @ 1,288 fps / 571# KE*
Hornady 175 gr. Critical Duty @ 1,083 fps / 456# KE

Glock 20 SF
Handload Barnes Tac-XP 140 gr. @ 1,247 fps / 484# KE
Corbon 150 JHP @ 1,276 fps / 542# KE*
Handload Nosler 150 JHP @ 1,274 fps / 541# KE*
Hornady 155 XTP @ 1,335 fps / 614# KE*
Handload 155 XTP @ 1,366 fps / 642# KE*
Hornady 175 gr. Critical Duty @ 1,146 fps / 510# KE

Just now found this article - notes dismal performance of the 175 gr. Silvertip out of a G29. Hmm.

Thanks for the link.
The "full power" Slivertip carried less KE than any of my picks out of a Glock 29.

With quick follow up shots as a consideration, I prefer the recoil of the 150 Corbon or 140 Barnes Tac-XP.

Prograde 10mm (Barnes Tac-XP 140) from 4.5'' barrel @ 1,216 fps 12.9'' / .76 in denim covered gel:

Why buy and carry a 10mm just to load it with ammo that is basically .40 S&W, but costs more and makes the gun larger?

Warp, look at it like most revolver shooters do...

Big powerful magnums loaded up with specials is a very common sight.
You can only go down from your maximum power ceiling, not up.

38 specials are very commonly carried in 357 revolvers, and are balistically pretty similar to a 9mm but much more expensive. 44 specials compared to 45acp is an even bigger price gap and a smaller performance gap I believe.

The Silvertips are still a very capable fight stopper and he can always "load up" for toothier, furrier threats. Not something very easy to do with a 40 S&W.

I prefer lighter kicking ammo in my Glock 29 10mm because I may carry it with a flush fitting magazine, allowing just a two finger grip. The potential for quick follow up shots is a consideration for me.

Yes, hot 40 S&W approaches the KE levels of some of my ammo; however, given comparable ammo, the felt recoil will be less from the 29 (vs a 23 or 27) due to the 29 having a heavier slide and wider grip.

In other words, with a 150 JHP going 1,230 fps, the 29 will have less felt recoil than my 23 (using a 29 magazine with a pinky rest). The 23 would be "snappy" with a 150 gr. @ 1,230 fps
