I'm wondering if anyone could recommend me a good firearms magazine easily obtainable at any Wat-Mart, Barnes & Noble, Safeway, ect. I don't want a magazine that just shows weapons for sale and basically says look at what I have. I prefer a magazine with more articles/reviews than sales listings. I'm looking for mainly handgun and revolver magazines and maybe a good rifle one too.

The problem is that most of the gun press are shills for the gun industry. Have you ever read a gun review in a magazine that panned the gun? I haven't. No matter how terrible a new gun is, you won't read a single cross word in the gun press. The adverse feedback is usually spread by word of mouth. (The gun press lives and dies by advertising.)

I like Guns and Ammo, Shooting Times, American Handgunner (if you can afford it) and Shotgun News (if you can find it).

I quit reading them, I didn't find all that much new and interesting, most of the review read more like a 4 page add than a unbiased review (sorry but best ever is limited to 1, not 5 each month)

and most if not everything I already had learned about online.

I used to love Guns and Ammo until it became 3/4 advertisements. And to reiterate what everyone else said it's pretty darn hard to find a negative review on anything. They're more advertisements within advertisements.

Rifle, Handloading, and American Handgunner. None of them afraid to tell it like it is. Next up, American Rifleman, American Hunter and for those of us who are multitalented, Bowhunting.

If you want opinionated reviews go to:

www.gunblast.com

Some people like gunblast others hate it. I go because Jeff will criticize what he sees as inferior product.

Reading his archives will keep you busy for a long time.

Guns and American Handgunner....i never miss an issue. greatest writers in the business

lots of gun mag on the racks if all you want to read about is the 1911 semi 45 acp pistol, I got sick of them years ago, the american rifleman mag from the NRA back in the 50s and 60s used to tell the truth about new weapons but stopped years ago now their all advertisement. good luck on finding something, let us all know if you come up with something decent.

I read and subscribe to SWAT. Pretty good info most of the time. I have seen a few negative reviews of guns in it as well. If memory serves I remember one about the judge.

I like SWAT as well. Has anyone else read Recoil? It's a new magazine (I don't think their website is fully operational yet last I checked) aimed at the "gun lifestyle"; I really liked the first issue, although, admittedly, it is pricey..

Read many of them when I was a kid. Now that I am more realistic I almost can't stand to read any of them. They remind me more of used car salesmen that anything else.

Shotgun News

'Don't know if it's what you're after, but I enjoy looking at Shotgun News from time to time. Despite the name, it's not at all limited to shotguns. But it's pretty much all about the hardware; I can't recall ever seeing anything on tactics or "It happened to me..." like in other gun mags.

They have one of the best technical writers around, Peter G. Kokalis, who used to be technical editor for Soldier of Fortune. This is a guy who can explain the inner workings of some very esoteric weaponry.

You'll also find ads for unusual accessories and historic militaria from around the world.

It's great reading for the outhouse, not the least of which reason is that, like the old MonkeyWard catalog, it's printed on relatively soft newsprint!
