I'm introducing a lady friend to guns. What are some good places not too far from central Indy that I can take her to to shoot? The closer to downtown Indy the better. Being able to pick and choose a "rental" gun for her is a must. Long or short guns, it doesn't matter.

Popguns is good for handguns but they were really crowded the last time I went. Does anyone know of a rifle range in the Indianapolis area? I don't know of any and would really appreciate any information on where to go.

Visiting Pops

If you can pick your timess to go to thier range you won't experinece much of a wait. Monday is out because they open late but Tuesday through Thursday between 12:30 and 4:00 I have always had luck getting in quickly. In some instances I was the only one on the range.

The new shooting range at Camp Atterbury should be opening up by late spring/early summer. It will be awsome compared to the old one, with many changes. I do believe however there will probably be an admission charge according to those in the know.

Indyogb, on the link you put up about the DNR ranges Wilbur Wright is closest to me. Do you know if that's a rifle range or only handgun/.22? I think I may head over there this weekend.

On the west side there is a pistol range at Eagle Creek open to the public on Saturday and (maybe) Sunday.

Here's where I go: www.danvilleconservationclub.com Danville is about 30 minutes outside Indy. Our monthly meeting is 2nd Wednesday at 6:30pm.

The website is a little cheesy, but it's nice and not crowded, though it can get busy on Saturday when the weather is nice. Cost is $60/yr + $25 fee the first year. The range is 100m.

Marion County Fish and Game

Ours is a nice club near Speedway and a short drive from DT Indy.

You can't shoot center-fire rifle since we are so close to housing developments but it's a nice club with a lot to offer and hopefully more on it's way.

Here is the website: http://www.indyrange.com/

You just missed our March meeting (3/6) but you can join on April 3. Feel free to attend any of the public events. Bowling pin and steel pistol shoots are a blast . . . literally.

Good luck.

I'm not sure if Atterbury will allow full auto on the new range, but it seems highly unlikely. I believe it will be better supervised to the extent of even having a range master on the firing line and keeping an eye on proper and improper gun handling, etc. Last I heard there was even talk of an outside firm taking over the operations, which would follow "my man Mitch's" outline for outsourcing.

+1

I'm a member there also.

DONS!!!!!!!!!!

For your safety stay away from Don's range. I know of 2 "accidental shootings " there. Your required to buy their targets and anything else they can force on you. Do the Indy gun scene a favor and don't use his range or buy from him. If you want to check out a great gun shop try Elmores on the south side ...

Which hospital?

Methodist? If so, that is a landmark site. I was born there.

Good luck, wacki.

Yup, you guessed right. With any luck I'll be taking her in a week or two. There's nothing like introducing a woman to the gun culture. :D

Skimming the websites it looks like popguns is the only one (other than Dons) that offers rental guns. Looks like that one is the winner. Thanks everyone for your help. If there are any other suggestions please post.
