Good pistol host for a 9mm suppressor

Looking into getting a 9mm pistol suppressed, after getting a .22 can and having a ball with it. What pistols work well with these? Also looking for suppressor suggestions as well.

Biggest factor right now seems to be barrel availability. Pistols I have are Browning High Power, CZ P01, Sig 226, Glock 17. Am leaning toward the Sig, but I know Glock barrels are a lot cheaper. Anyone know a source of threaded Sig 226 barrels fairly cheap?

I do not have much to offer except that using a silencer on a HP without a recoil booster can damage the pistol. After several hundred rounds through my suppresed HP, the guide rod is deformed and the slide will not function properly.

I have shot a glock 17 with an AAC can, it worked well. I have heard that the Berretta 92's do not need a recoil booster as the barrel does not tilt during recoil.

Ranb -- THANK YOU for your post. I've been toying with the idea of suppressing an M&P 9mm, but had wondered about the mass vs barrel tilt and whether damage was a possibility. Never head of a recoil booster, so that's my next "homework assignment".

As far as I know any 9mm silencer will come with a recoil booster from the factory as long as you specify it. The recoil booster is also called a nielsen device or linear decoupler. It is a spring loaded device that decouples the weight of the silencer from the barrel so that the barrel will allow the slide to operate correctly. A 9mm or 380 caliber pistol with a fixed barrel (blowback operated) is not a good host for a silencer in most cases if noise reduction is the main reason for using a silencer. Blow back pistols frequently have lots of ejection port noise. My Makarov clone using a 3 grain subsonic load was louder than my HP 9mm using double the powder charge and the same silencer. I have only heard of a few people who were happy with their blowback suppressed 9mm pistols. Where as most people are happy with their recoil operated 9mm's as long as they do not expect hollywood quiet.

22lr blowbacks like the browning buckmark and rugers perform very well despite the ejection port noise simply because the powder charge is so small. An exception is the Aguilla SSS with the 60 grain bullet and short case. Lots of pop coming from my 10/22 with that round, and it does not cycle the bolt enough either. I think it is best to stick with a recoil operated pistol unless you are using a 22lr.

The availability of threaded barrels and the height of the sights are important factors. For example, my Browning HP has threaded barrels available, but I have not been able to find sights that I can see over the 1.25" can. The barrel is also very slender and has no shoulder for the silencer to index on. I had to make the rear end cap a tight fit on the small non-threaded part of the barrel to ensure the silencer stayed aligned. Unscrewing it a quarter turn meant the silencer drooped and gave me baffle strikes which dented the front end cap. Using it with hot loads, a light weight spring and no recoil booster resulted in a damaged spring guide after 300 rounds.

I can tell you that a Glock would be a much better choice than a Browning HP to suppress in my opinion. The best place to ask opinions is on http://www.silencertalk.com .

Class III is illegal in my state, but when I lived in Wyoming, I saw a lot of Beretta 92's suppressed. Since the barrel moves straight back (non-tilting) during recoil, they are a great platform. A threaded barrel for them usually runs around 200-300 dollars, plus you'll need a locking block assembly ($30 or so). Glocks also seem to be good platforms and threaded barrels are much cheaper about $110-200.

The P226 has tested as the most quiet 9mm host and after comparing to a G19 & USP9 I would agree. Although the difference is slight, the P226 balances so much better than the Glocks once you hang that can off the end of it. Pick up a factory threaded barrel from TopGunSupply and don't look back.
