good place to get a 1911 frame

wife has really taken to going out to the range to shoot, after our last range trip she said she would like to not only to get a 1911, but she would also like to build it.

I'm so proud

We were going to build this over the next few months as she picks out what part she likes for this and that ending with us sending the final gun off for a little extra fitting.

What I would like to know is what is a good place to start to get a stripped frame and slide for a government size 1911, I saw wilson used to sell them but far as I can tell they disontinued it.

Get a Brownells catalog, there are several listed there. I just got hold of a used custom 1911 that has a frame by Remsport Mfg, Ludlow, MA (Yeah, I never heard of them either) it is a quality frame, the slide is unmarked but I believe it is also a Remsport. I do not know who did the work but it is a solid, well put together 1911. Sounds like you have a fun project planned........good luck. Keep shootin' and check 6

Search Remsport and call them. They are not that widely known, but do quality work. I bought a fitted frame and slide off of them a few years ago and had them bobtail it. To me, it looks identical to some of the Dan Wesson frames and slide.........heard that they were the same, but not sure......

I would think Caspian is the first place to start. They offer some options that would make your job a whole lot easier. I think they also offer custom serial numbers, which would be pretty cool.

Fusion has a package Frame and slide barrel already fit. You can buy every thing you need from them or then shop for the other parts.

Lot of hand fitting with a 1911 not just a drop togather parts pistol. Its not a AR-15

Unless you have a lot of time on your hands or really enjoy the adventure associated with a new project I would opt for a factory built 1911 - there are lot's of manufacturers and the prices are very competitive. As aprevious oster mentioned putting together a 1911 requires a lot of hand fitting it is not a drop in assembly.

He used to offer a 1911 building class where students build their own pistol, I assume he still offers it.


I don't know what your experience is, but if you've never built a 1911, you should know there's a lot of hand fitting, and a lot that can go wrong. I'm not trying to dissuade you in any way, but you need to know it is not a drop-in, "Lego" gun.

Might want to get Kuhnhausen's manual.

That being said, Caspian offers a fitted slide/frame combo.

Another route would be to buy a RIA or similar, and upgrade it to suit. You can strip it to the bare frame and sell the take-offs for most of the cost of the gun. Then buy back what she wants.

I would recommend contacting pistolsmiths about the project as many have extended wait lists and it's no fun having a bag of parts in storage for 3 years. They can also recommend what works and looks good and perhaps which parts play well with others.

Bob Rodgers does still teach classes, twice a year I believe but for the two of you to attend will be pricey. He is other worldly class and receiving instruction from him would be priceless. I would recommend some serious homework before considering the class as most of his students appear prepared at least on concept before arriving.

There are lots of places that offer frames for sale but you will have to go through your local FFL to recieve one as the frame IS the gun and the serial numbered part. If you have a local dealer/gunsmith they may be able to recommend a good frame and order it for you.
