I'm thinking about getting a Ruger American and need a scope to go with it. My budget is about $150 to $200.

It will be a .308, shooting probably no further than 150 yards, and when at the range will be shooting it repeatedly. Its mostly going to be for paper, but I'd like to use it for hunting next year as well.

So what are some good options that will hold their zero, durable, and within my budget?

This will be my first bolt action and never bought a scope before. Only dealt with eotechs.

Thanks.

Having used many of the popular scopes in that price range, I've come to the conclusion that the Burris Fullfiled II for a hunting scope is by far the best option until you step up to the Zeiss Conquest.

If you wanted a tactical the SWFA SS scopes for slightly more are a good choice.

take a look at what is coming on sale soon near you. you might want to wait a couple weeks. Almost anything in the $150-$200 range from a known quality brand will work fine for you. Everybody has their favorites, but they're all about the same within the same price range. Like sedans.

I picked up a 3x9x40 Nikon Prostaff BDC recently for $175. I've only used it 4 times so far, but it seems like a good scope for the money.

Go to Midway and look for Bushnell 3200. It's an "old model" scope and they're selling off the old stock. $199 with free shipping, Mil-Dot and 1/10 Mil clicks. Fixed 10X. That might be a deal breaker for hunting.

There have been some good recommendations so far. The scope I took off my .308 was a Burris 3-9X Fullfield with the BDC. Might put it on my bolt .223 and keep that Simmons for a spare. Or sell it to Carter. :)

Leupold VX-1,Burris and Redfield would be my top picks. If Nikon stepping up to the Buckmaster is a big jump in quality over the Prostaff for a small price difference.

People often forget the Leupold in this price range and automaticaly think they are too expensive. The VX-1 is $199, about the same price as the others. The glass is no better, but they have some other feaures which give them an advantage over others.

Okay so I've narrowed it down to the Nikon Buckmaster, Burris Fullfield II, and the Bushnell 3200.

Now time to do some more in depth reading after work.

Nikon buckmaster 4x14. have 7 of them and never a problem. from a 17 HMR to A custom mauser in 30-338 win mag.

I've bought 3 of these in the last couple of years, almost like a night force.

Look at the Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9's on closeout at Natchez Shooter's Supply. $169 is a steal for that scope.

natchez hits you for like 20 or 25 in shipping through. I'm also a fan of the vortex lines of scopes. But if we're looking for a super deal, then how about the nitrex scope natchez is still clearing out. http://www.natchezss.com/product.cfm?contentID=productDetail&prodID=WE94563&src=exrbSrch

http://www.natchezss.com/product.cfm?contentID=productDetail&prodID=WE94566 I have a 6-20x50 nitrex tr-1, and it's an awesome piece of glass. I talked to weaver before I bought it and they said if something went wrong they would replace it with a grand slam of equal power.

I suggest a Redfield Revolution 2-7x33 (with accu range reticle).

It's only $169 and there's a promo through Redfield to get a $30 rebate.

I have the 4-12x40 and find it to be an exceptionally well made and clear glassed scope, love the accu range reticle as it doesn't make the crosshairs too busy at all, and it's (made by and) backed by Leupold repair no questions asked policy.

The dials are a but mushy though, the reports on that are true, but as long as you're paying attention when making adjustments is ok.

Redfield: I have two: one has slop in the adjustment. Optics are not on par with a Weaver.
Burris fullfield II I have had two. Great image and good reticle and built like a tank. However the 3X9 exhibits more parallax than a Weaver scope.
3200: No experience with it.
Weaver Grand Slam is even better

I have had my old cheapo Bushnell Banner 3-9x 40mm for the past 10 plus years that I have used on my muzzlelaoders and am now using on my Ruger HAwyeye 25-06. It still holds zero and I can still comfortably shoot small bottle targets up to 300 yards consistently. I am tempted to change it to a higher end scope just because it's "cheap", but I decided no to since it's doing what I want it to do. A brand new one costs a little less than $100!

Hey Carter, I just picked up an American in .308 myself.
I took the Redfield 3-9x40 off my Savage 111 and had it mounted on the American.
I think the Refield was about $175.
I can't wait to take it to the range!
Good luck!
