Good snubie.....

Ruger SP101. If you want a snubnose that can handle unlimited amounts of .38 Spl. +P or even .357 Magnum without beating you up too much, it is your best choice. In second place are the Smith & Wessons; I would personally avoid the fleaweight ones, though. The Colt is a great classic snubnose, but will be a minimum of 20 years old.

If you're planning to get into a combat situation, change your plans. :neener:

If you're just concerned about effective defense, I'd advocate a steel S&W J-frame. I've got a Model 60 that is marvelously accurate when I do my part, and the recoil is nice and soft due to the weight.

The Ruger is nice, but it's just too large/heavy to carry at all times for me. I just don't trust Tauri, due to believing internet slander. I guess if I'm going to have a single prejudice it's a relatively harmless choice.

If you choose to get something smaller than the SP101, go HERE and buy a pocket holster for it.

A combat situation requires a bit more than a snubby. A long gun either shotgun or rifle is more of an offensive weapon. A snubbie is a defensive type weapon. It will save your hide if your life is on the line and there is no way out of the situation. A gun which you will have with you for security and available in time of need to protect your life or your families lives.

Pick From This List

Colt's: Detective Special, Cobra, or Agent

The Dick Special is all steel and weighs in at 21 ozs, the Cobra has an alloy
frame and weighs 15 ozs; while the Agent has a shortened grip, and weighs
only 14 ozs. All hold six rounds of .38 Special cartridges. ;)

Smith & Wesson:

The choices here are many~! From the 2" all steel six shot models 10, 15,
and 64*; to the Airweight five shot models 37, 42, 442, 637** and
642**. Or the gun that started the stainless steel craze, way back in 1965-
the original (old model) 60* in .38 Special.

FootNote: * Denotes all stainless steel .38's, and ** denotes the stainless
alloy combo guns. The latter reduces the weight, and is better suited for
use as a CCW piece~! :scrutiny:;):D

I believe the S&W 642 38 Special +P is the most popular snub nose. In most cases, it is easily carried in the front pocket.

You would be well served with the Gold Dot Short Barrel ammunition.

If you leave your shirt untucked, then the Ruger SP-101 would be great for belt holster carry. The Short Barrel ammo is also available in .357 Magnum.

Going into COMBAT with a snubbie?
I'd want a brace of those newfangled S&W 327 8-shooters (I also want a long gun as well, and maybe a friend or 9 each carrying long guns too). ;)

They're light (kinda largish tho) and hold a lotta rounds in either full goose bozo magnums or the more sedate .38 and that could be reassuring. :D

For day to day carry, with hopefully zero combat involvment, I have no problem carrying a Model 60 daily. Another round might be nice so either a Model 10 in 2" or a Colt Det. Spl. should fit the bill. But it might be nice to have at least one of those 8-shooters... as soon as S&W drop the price down to less than a grand (yeah-right)

The Ruger is nice, but it's just too large/heavy to carry at all times for me.
guess you bought the internet slander on this also, there is 1oz difference and size is in percievable,I seriously doubt you could tell which was in your pocket or holster without looking (or touching before you say the grips are different)

The most perfect 2" .38 snubby for a gunfight? I would say an S&W M10 or M64. If we can go longer, then a 2.5" M19/M66 or 2.5" M686. If 3" meets the snubby definition, then a 3" GP100, with honorable mention going to the S&W M10 and M64. I based this on the criteria set in the original post, which does not mention carrying or concealing, just use in a combat situation. Personally, I regularly carry SP101 snubbies, because when carry enters the equation, the slightly smaller size than a K-frame matters. I also use .357 ammo, but that is getting off-topic.

Many folks include a 3" as a snubbie, then My S&W13 3" is one of the best.
For combat situations, a K frame 65 or 13.
for CCW hide it in your pocket a S&W 642

Ala Dan, I think you got your * mixed up. The 637 and 642 are not all stainless guns. The cylinder is stainless, the frame is aluminum.

Thanks for all your replies I carry a S&W 340 now. Would like one of the 8 shot Smithy's though as baba louie mentioned, any good things about the 8-shot, seen one on GA for $895

340

I figured you'd go heavier when you mentioned "combat." That'll be a nice carry gun though. I haven't shot that one, I imagine it to be punishing.

I have a plethora of choices in my collection, all good guns one way or another. Two guns I like best for carry are my M85UL Taurus and my SP101 Ruger. The Ruger is powerful and hides easily, accurate, tough, couldn't ask for more. The Taurus is a .38, but is accurate and so light you forget you have it on you.

Another I very much like that I don't own and makes ultimate sense for pocket carry is the M642 Smith and Wesson. It's a fantastic gun for the pocket, though the trigger is a little rough out of the box. Like the SP101, I expect it would smooth out over time.

I also like the M38 bodyguard type guns, shielded hammer for pocket carry, but capable of single action fire. I like stainless so the 638 would be my choice.

Taurus's model of the bodyguard in .357 magnum is the M651, nice gun for a nice price.

One of these days, I'm probably going to get that Taurus. Then again, the 851 in titanium and .38 special is probably a better choice. But, I'm a sucka for the .357. 25 ounces would shoot okay, but it'd be a little heavy in a pocket.

If you're going into COMBAT.... the military will issue your weapon. If you're looking for an SD revolver... get the one you can shoot the best

For "combat" I'd rather have something other than a 5 or 6 shot 38.

But for defense I like a laser equipped small revolver like the S&W Model 36 and 60 or a Model 10.

Assuming 'combat' to mean simply sallying forth armed, I'd opt for the 2 1/2" S&W 686 Plus in .357. It's a heavy bugger in stainless steel, but even burly .357s are easily tamed by the gun's mass. That means serious lead zinging toward the target.

I have a 2007 model, with that danged lock, but overall, it's one of the nicest Smith's I have owned to date, and I've had more than a few in almost all of the frame sizes. If you'd call the 640s etc. pocket rockets, this one feels like a pocket tank.

I have already had to use it while the hairs on my neck were standing on end. A couple of thugs that looked like they just got out of prison, tried to ambush my wife and I at a deserted campground just north of Mt. Shasta. As soon as I saw them tailing us, the alarm bells in my head were going off and I knew these predators meant business. We outsmarted them and left them hiding in the bushes watching the trail where we weren't. That bit of strategic movement on our part probably saved their lives. It was comforting to have that Smith in my front pocket, stuffed with Gold Dots to the tune of 7 rounds. I knew right then and there that, had their plan gelled, I would have done what needed to be done and their chances for survival were not good. My wife always reminds me to "bring along a little something," whenever we're going camping now.
