I'm pretty stoked. I ordered a Rock River upper back in February. I think I ordered it on the 15th. That puts the actual lead time at 111 days which is pretty close to their estimated lead time of 90 days. I dropped it on a Spike's lower and popped in a RRA National Match trigger. My only complaint is that the Spike's finish isn't even close to the RRA finish, but if I were worried about that I would have ordered a complete rifle.

Here it is next to my M&P15.

It has Hogue grip, Magpul ACS stock, Weaver Tactical rings, Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 w/ BDC and Rock River National Match trigger.

It's going to be hard to avoid the poor house shooting this thing.

Congrats! I love my .458 SOCOM. It's a sweet shooting little thumper. It always seems to get lots of attention at the range too. :)

FYI if you plan on reloading for it, you may want to check the dust cover spring. Mine was a little long and it put gouges on the brass, until I cut just a bit off of it.

Great advice, mine did the same thing - ruined a bunch of expensive brass before I noticed.

I like H4198 for SOCOM loads.

Are any of you getting more than 1900 fps out of a 300 grain bullet? I've got some Corbon Hunter that advertises 1900fps from it's 300 grain load.

I have only been loading 300 grainers to around 1600 FPS, and a little over 1500 for the 405 grainers (10 shots - ES of 52, SD 21).

I haven't done much work with the 300 grainers yet.

I would not try to beat Cor Bon's load.

I chrono'd just 3 rounds of their 405 grain load. It ran 1575 (1600 is their claim) w/ a ES of 6.55 FPS.

I got mine a couple of months ago from pkfirearms.com, lead time...less than a week. They only have two in stock now a 14.5" with attached fh & a complete rifle.
I call mine "The Bull"

If you dont, I'll buy your brass from you.

The lightest bullets I've loaded were 405s and I have had them over 1600fps but it was hard on the brass. I'm building a bolt gun now.

Jmorris, I don't reload right now, but this 458 SOCOM might push me into it. If I don't, you have first dibs on brass.

First time you fill the 10 round mag and you figure out it costs better than $30, a loader looks like a REAL good investment.

I found some .458 bullets at a shop for $15/50. Bought every one he had. Didn't have much luck with H-110. Using 4198 now. Gonna get into casting and get it down to maybe 15-20 cents/round..

I can tell you from experience that a .458 is rather devastating on a deer. DRT.

I've had good results using 4 different powders on my handloads.
H110,IMR 4198,Lil Gun,and Reloader 7

I load 300gr-325gr-350gr-and 405gr bullets for mine.

Start off low,and watch for pressure signs!

To be honest, after I sight it in I probably won't shoot it more than a few times per year. I don't have time to shoot the way I used to. I intended for this to be a deer/hog rifle, so it's been good to read how effective it's been in that role. I did a lot of research before I ordered this rifle. I think I made a good choice for a bang/flop killer out to 250 yards. That's what the BDC reticle is for. I loved it on my 45-70.

Alright, first range session out of the way. Something isn't right. This gun is mangling my brass. It's cracking nearly every case. It's also shredding the back of the cases. It doesn't feed very reliably. I had three misfeeds in 18 rounds.

I was shooting in the rain which didn't help. I was frustrated with the rain and taking a beating from the rifle. I'm going to with hold judgement until I can get to range on a better day. Any ideas on the beating up of the brass? I know some of the misfeeds were caused by PMags, but I had one with an aluminum mag also.

Whoa... hold the press dude.

If your brass come out looking like that, that upper needs to go back to the factory.

(EDIT: *DO* send brass samples in WITH the upper so they can see what's going on. I'm also assuming you're using factory loads, and not handloads?)

Yeah I'm really curious to see what your brass looks like. "Split" cases - e.g. splits down the side.. if from the front are not good.. brittle (hard) brass, or bad chamber.. Splits from the BACK are WAY the hell worse, that's a blowout.

That's a SEVERE overpressure sign. Very dangerous.
