Got one of those wonderful problems...

Which of the following should I blow my gubbmit check on for time served?

  • An AK-47 (or SAR1, whatever) in 7.62x39 despite the recent purchase of a bushie.

  • A Rhodesian Ridgeback as a companion for the next 13 years.

  • A handful of oddball guns. Maybe a mauser, a coach SxS shotgun, and a Springfield M6 scout.

Ok, after serving a month on grand jury, I just got my check for 480 bucks. Instead of using it to pay off my cell phone bill, or food for me for the next month, what fun thing should I spend it on?

1) An AK-47. Even though i just picked up my first bushie, I've been wanting to pick up as many bannable guns as i can before the shtf. Wont have the money to keep it well fed, but it would be nice to have.

2) A real dog. A rhodesian ridgeback. I've been wanting to get my own dog for a while now, I'll be able to work out the rest of the summer to be as flexible as possible for raising a puppy, and doing training in the fall/spring. They make good scent hounds suitable for hunting or even work (cadaver, accelerant, drugs). Don't want to make a career out of it, but its there as an option. Also having a good guard dog where I am not allowed to defend myself by modern methods couldnt hurt.

3) Get a few oddball guns on the list. A Yugoslavian mauser, a side by side coach gun, and a springfield M6 scout.

4) 15 mags and a case of ammo for the Bushmaster. Nuff said.

I would get the rhodesian ridgeback. They are a great dog. Only reason I don't have one right now is that I work to much to give proper attention and training to dog. :(

The AK47

for $480 you can probably get the gun and a case and a half or 2 of ammo.

7.62x39 is alot cheaper than feeding your Bushie.

I'd 2nd the AK choice. I've walked into a gunshow and grabbed an AK, 2 30 round mags, and 1,000 rounds of Wolf for around $400 bucks. Twice.

I'm a fan of dogs but I honestly like mutts. No two are alike and, ya know, sometimes you get a real winner.

Get the dog. Men and dogs have been living together for the hundred thousand years before guns and will be together for the hundred thousand years after the last gun is just a rusty spot on the ground. :D

Go for the dog; you can always buy the guns (knock on wood), but finding the time to properly raise/train a dog is tough to do.

If you can sand the commitment get the dog. I have known 3 Ridgebacks all were great dogs.
But you could also go to a ridgeback rescue site , get the dog for next to nothing and still have enough left over for a couple of oddballs or maybe even the AK, certainly enouhg for some ammo and mags.

If you wanted to, you could always get a free dog and go with one of the other options. Not a ridgeback of course, but I'm sure you could find a good mixed breed.

Get the dog. None of the guns are going to make you feel better when you are lonely, cold, sad, tired, etc. Even if you don't get the ridgeback, go rescue a dog from the pound. You have the desire and the time right now. The guns will always be there later.

Dogs rock!

Set on the ridgeback? If ya have that much room - *I* would suggest a Mastiff <eg>

Course - you'd have to find a deal to find one in the 400-500$ range. We had one for that much (long story) but we decided to keep her for breeding. (ANY dog you get - would suggest puppy - even 4-5 mo old dogs are wierd - they will usually warm up - but never like a 6-8wk old puppy does to the best thing she/he's known since sliced bread)

oh well - guess my suggestion is dog. Most are aleart enough to warn ya of incomming danger (and of course the incomming odd animal noise that means nothing - but has ya looking out windows anyway rofl) Warm enough to use as footwarmers. and are ALWAYS happy to see ya.

Fav quote - The man who said you can't buy happipeness must have never bought a puppy.

Get the dog absolutely!

Guns don't need you to come home at lunch when they're young. Guns don't have to be housebroken. Guns don't need to be enrolled in "Little Gun Fun Class" to socialize them toward other guns. Guns don't need to be loaded two or three times a day (and then fired 4 or 5 times!). If you've got the time now - get the dog.

On the other hand, your guns won't cuddle with you when you've had a bad day nor will they willingly play with you. Your guns won't protect your property when you're at work and they won't warn you when something's up.

Of course, your guns won't eat your socks or lick your vehicle windows either. :D

Ridgeback

Guns and mags aren't happy to see you when you get home. They won't keep your house safe while you're away.

OTOH, guns don't shed hair, pick up ticks, or leave whoopsies on the carpet.

But make sure you've got the lifestyle to properly care for a dog. Mrs. Pdmoderator loves dogs, but we're not home enough to keep a dog from going Crazy Eddie from loneliness.

Get The Dog.

And may I suggest you select an animal from a shelter?

By picking them carefully, we've had fantastic luck, and found the best, sweetest dogs, who otherwise wouldn't have had a chance.

Then go spend money on an AK. :)

I get the impression that you are single. If that is the case, definatly get the dog. When my dogs were puppies my wife wanted me to meet her at the university with the dogs. Some of her friends wanted to see the them. In the half hour I was waiting outside the building she was in I could have easily gotten 3 or 4 phone numbers from girls who stopped to pet the pups. 'Course, being that I was already hitched I didn't get any numbers, but without the puppies probably none of those girls would have even given me a second look.

I definatly recommend the shelters as a place to get a dog. My wife thought she wanted a pure bred German Shepherd, but quickly realized that I was not going to abide by the $500+ cost of buying one. So we went to Animal Control, and then the Humane Society. As we were leaving the Humane Society we ran into a lady and her daughter who were about to drop off 3 puppies. There were 3/4 German Shepherd, 1/4 Chow. We took 2 of them and have been very happy with how they turned out. We didn't pay a dime for them.

So, as others have suggested, if you get a rescue dog you'll then have plenty of money left over for guns/ammo/mags. Plus you'll have a friend that will always greet you with enthusiasm every time you come home. My dogs get so excited when I come home that I have to put them on a sit-stay just to put my lunch pail on the counter.

Arc Light,
Great dilemma to be in.

Would your current situation allow you to give a dog the attention and training that it needs? If so, go for the dog.

If not, go for the AK clone.

You can always neglect the AK for a month or so with minor if any ill affects. Can't do that with a dog.

Good luck

Tossup between 1 and 4. The number of mags you have for the bushy would be the determining factor.

Wow, lots of responses.

I have 5 mags for the bushie, enough for a fun 10 minutes at the range
And my irregular job can sort of cover my bills. Possible food for the dog and veterinary bills would be covered by my family who would be more willing to help the dog than me :p

Factoring in the whole chick magnet thing, maybe I'll put the dog off for a few months, judging from my 4 and a half years of college so far, I could easily have enough time for a dog for my last term this spring, or if I transfer a couple terms at a school somewhere warm.

Unfortunately, I've never had good results from a shelter. The greatest animals that have lived in my family's house have all been strays that found us, or picked from a breeder.

So maybe I'll throw part of it in the bank for later, and grab an AK or a CETME to keep me happy for now.

Thanks for all the feedback.

If you go to the shelter for a dog just be prepared to pass over a lot of dogs before you find the right one. You'll have to go often as the best dogs usually don't last very long. Also, if you find a cute one don't listen to the person telling you that "you have to adopt it right away as it has already passed its time limit and will be put down tonight." They play that line on a lot of people to get them to take the dog right then and there reagardless of if its true or not. Also, be aware that many shelters will no longer allow the animal out the door without being neutered/spayed first. That's part of the reason we took those two puppies before they went into the the Humane Society. We felt it would be better for them to wait until they were fully grown before getting then spayed, rather than at 8 weeks old. We did get that done when they were about 6 months old (before their first heat).
