If you were choosing between a Sig P220 or a HK USP which would you choose and for reason. Both are excellent pistols but there has to be a reason for one over the other besides personal taste. This will be used for some CCW and home protection.

I'd choose the HK 'cause I already have the SIG :)

The P220 (European style mag release) was my first .45ACP, it took me a while to warm up to the 1911 and discover that I really don't like guns that require a DA/SA transition. So if I had neither and knowing what I do, I'd definitely get the HK because it'll do cocked and locked or DA/SA if that floats your boat.

Main problem with HK guns is sticker shock, not that SIGs are cheap :) But around here SIGs are much easier on the wallet.

Tough choice.

Personally I'd get the Sig because I already have a USP. :D

Both are big guns. Sigs overall have better triggers and better ergonomics. Reliability is about the same. Sigs are a little cheaper. USPs are probably lighter....ehhhh...

...I say flip a coin. You can't go wrong with either.

I'd go with the SIG. If it's a full-size HK you're looking at, it will be significantly larger than the SIG, which makes CCW a bit more difficult. The SIG is stone-cold reliable with just about any ammo, more accurate than I can shoot it off-hand, and weighs in at about the same as a Colt Lightweight Commander. What's not to like? :D

They are both great handguns.

Choose the P220 if you want a slimmer butt and slightly better concealability or the USP if you want extra capacity.

That's what it comes down to.

My choice would be the Sig, the 220ST to be precise. :D

The USP's front/back strap checkering hurts my hands. Its like holding a meat cleaver. Great design, those checkerings jus' kill the feel of the gun. Accurate suckers though.

The P220, I'm jus' really comfortable shooting it. Though it doesn't have the option of condition 1 and DA/SA, if you become proficient with the DA/SA transition you're jus' as deadly.

Plus, I find the Sig to be sexier. there, I said it. SEXY!

The Sigs are also easier to ccw, since they're a lil' slimmer.

Well, I solved that very same problem...I got both. :D However, if I had to choose between the two, I'd go with the USP over the Sig. Reason is that up here when winters get down to -35 without the wind chill and the heavy gloves come out, I can still get a heavy glove into the trigger guard of a USP that would normally choke in any other trigger guard. Second, you have the advantage of 12 round magazines in the H&K over the 7 round mags in the Sig. But I supposed one of the biggest reasons I prefer my USP over the Sig is that I grew up on 1911s so that makes the controls of the USP far more natural than the "backwards controls" Sig puts their slide release and decocking lever at. Now the Sig on the other hand does have a lot better trigger than the USP and a little thinner than the USP making it better for CCW (though a USP under a winter jacket isn't hard to conceal either). Really, you aren't going to go wrong with either of them. I can say that neither one has had so much as a hiccup and in the accuracy department, it depends on the day which one will turn in better groups so I'd hae to say that this is another wash. Really, you're going to be happy with either choice you make.

Can't go wrong; I have two USP's and have shot the 220.

Assuming capcity is not an issue (post ban USP full size in 45 holds 12 to the SIG's 8) I might give the nod to the 220st . . . . all metal guns seem to sit better with me these days.

I own both and have a very slight preference for the 220. The 220 will conceal a little better but then again the USP has the option of cocked & locked which for some is nice. Have you considered the compact USP? They aren't all that compact but will be a lot easier to hide than the full size or 220.

I'd buy the Sig. I really don't like the USP, and especially so in the full size variants. They are just too dang big.

The Sig 220 is one of the better handguns ever made.

I have both, and you can't go wrong with either. I think the P220 feels better in the hand, but the additional capacity of the USP is nice. P220 8 + 1, full size USP .45 10 + 1 now, 12+1 next week.

Oh, I don't think the USP compacts are all that large. My USP-40 Compact is pretty much the same size as my Glock 23 and both of them work fine for CCW.

Make mine a SIG.

Having fired both I find it fits my hand better and recoils less. The HK in .45 seemed to recoil more possibly due to grip design and a higher bore axis than the SIG.

The SIG has a better trigger pull and I can live without cocked and locked.

And way down on the list of priorities, the HK is butt ugly compared to a SIG.

If this were like a raffle or something and I won? I'd take the USP because I could probably sell it for a bit more than the SIG and then use that money to buy another 1911 or a couple CZs. :p

If I had to decide on one for daily carry such as a security job? I'd definately take the SIG. Feels more comfortable in my hands. But I wouldn't throw a hissy over being issued the USP. Both are fine, reliable, shootable weapons, but the USP just doesn't do much for me.

Close race to the finish line; but the SIG P220 wins by an
eye lash! :D

Greeting's All-

As most of you know, I have been been a devoted follower of
SIG-SAUER classic P-series handguns for many years now. From
the days over at TFL, on to the current day at THR; the .45 caliber
P220A has been (and still is) my #1 choice in a defensive
combat handgun. And my reasoning is based on one word:

RELIABILITY

Need I say more?

Best Wishes,

I probably owned the only p220 lemon ever produced :( I ended up getting rid of it & applying the proceeds towards my USP 45. My USP 45 has been my favorite pistol since round number 1 ;)
Go w/ the HK!

Either one. It really doesn't matter. The SIG has a better trigger and better trigger potential. If I get another USP it will get worked over by Bruce Grey. Reliability is a draw. I like the USP's safety and mag release, but the SIG arrangement is very good. Trigger reset is quicker on the SIG, if that matters to you. The USP fits my hand better, but that will not be the case for most people. Both guns are fairly beefy for carry. Both are plenty accurate right out of the box.

I'd pick the one that feels best.

In my experience, the SIG, while a fine weapon, is less reliable than the HK.

The HK has a higher capacity (12+1 vs. 7+1, or 8+1 with optional mags).

The HK has more options for carry (cocked and locked, DAO, hammer down safety on) and ambi control options.

The SIG has a smaller gripframe.

The SIG has an arguably better DA pull (but the HK has C&L capability, and if you know how to lube it right the DA rivals the SIG).

The HK is arguably tougher and more durable.

You really can't go wrong with either one. If the HK fits your hands I'd take it, if not, the SIG.

Shoot 'em both if you can before deciding.

I have a Sig P 220 and had a HK USP. I sold the HK.

Both are good guns and advantages of operation exist for each.
Money spent on either one is likely to be well spent.

If you reload, be advised that HK will not shoot lead reloads without a bbl. change. The barrel is similar to Glock limitations. I sold my HK because of the lead round situation.

Some report that Sigs don't shoot lead very well.

It will be more difficult to get good gunsmithing with the HK.

I was looking at a Sig P220 when I was recently shopping for pistols. I have owned 3 HK USP Compacts .357 SIG, 9mm, and .40. All of them were great. I ended up buying a gun that to me has a very similar feel in my hand as the P220 and that is a Beretta 8045F Cougar. It is undoubtably the best pistol I have ever owned. I know I am too late for your descision but don't rule out the well made Cougar line from Beretta....these are still made in Italy!
