Okay, I couldn't pass it up. Just out of sheer morbid curiosity, I picked one up at a local pawn shop. I have to tell you, I was pleasantly surprised. It was much more refined than I had expected it to be. I haven't fired it yet.

Just looking at it and detail stripping it, the gun is fairly well thought out. The layout is typical fixed barrel, spring around the barrel, blowback operation. The chamber is fluted to assist in extraction, methinks. The hammer is shrouded by a plastic shroud that screws onto the abbreviated slide assembly. The grip is boxy like the KelTec P11 descendant. There is an ambidextrous safety that bites into my trigger finger on the right side. Trigger pull is surprisingly smooth and light. Sight picture is excellent. Front sight is drift adjustable for windage.

The magazine is plastic and appears strong enough. I loaded it up with 30 rounds of 22 Magnum FMJ loads. It appears that hollow points would be more appropriate being shorter. I like the FMJ bullets because I feel penetration is more important on such a small caliber bullet. The only other 22 Magnum I own is a NAA Black Widow. That’s a nice gun too.

Other than the safety digging into my skin, I found the slide was difficult to retract with a lowered hammer. Also, there is a shroud that fits in front of the grip frame and under the slide assembly. This shroud rubs against the slide. It's held there by the recoil spring which only bears on the bottom of the spring. The top of the spring is left to dangle in space. Not sure why it was designed that way.

Any other comments?

Cool! I've always wondered if there was a high-capacity rimfire pistol. I've always thought you could shove a bunch of .22s in a double stack magazine. Is there a .22LR version?

I saw a guy shooting one of those at the range a couple years ago. Kinda weird! I should have asked him if I could try it! Doh!

:banghead:

I fired a Grendel P-10 once (the .380 version). The trigger pull was approximately 475 pounds, but it functioned fine.

I have a P-30 that I have been very happy with except, as you mention, how the safety lever digs into your hand when it's in the fire position...

It's a blast to shoot...

Recommendation: wear sunglasses even on bright days because it produces a tremendous fireball (which I think is quite cool...:))...

Have great fun with it...

By the way given the P-10 comment, the P-10/P-12 and the P-30 use very different firing mechanisms. The P-12/P-10 uses a double action only mechanism with an enclosed, low-mass hammer that strikes the firing pin at high speed.

The P-30 uses a typical single action type mechanism and, as Badger Arms mentions, produces a reasonably nice trigger pull...

For what it's worth...

When the .22 Magnum Grendel P-30 first appeared, I had the chance to buy one with two spare magazines and 500 rounds of ammo for a couple hundred bucks. The guy let me shoot it, and...I gotta admit...it was a blast. A fun gun, though I'm not sure exactly what its niche would be.

Accuracy wasn't exactly sterling, but the .22 WMR isn't really known for that in handguns...but it was just fun!

No malfunctions at all, regardless of ammunition/bullet type. Ejection got to be a little hairy as the gun heated up...and it did get heated up...but nothing serious.

I understand that there have been reports of "iffy" function when the guns aren't clean and well-oiled...but I didn't see it in the one that I shot.

Kinda wish I'd bought it.

It wasn't designed that way. You might be missing a part. there should be a little ring with a step on the outside that the spring presses on, and the shroud fits in the step of that little spacer. Either you are missing that part, or it's not assembled correctly.

Of course there are no replacement parts available, since Grendel is not in buisness, but it seems like it works without that part.

Congrats. I'm jealous. I was in the process of buying one on line, but became uneasy about the deal and jumped ship (I was communicating with the guy via E-mail, not through GA or GB or anything like that; I had found his WTS add in a forum I'd never seen). I do still want one, though.

IF you don't mind, what did you pay for that critter? Going rate seems to be $400-$600 in VG to EX/new condition.

Going rate is very high--P30 is an out of production collectible. I have seen the magazine alone priced at 75 to 100 dollars.

Even rarer is the carbine version that resembles the Uzi carbine.
