Today I stopped by the local gun shop just to chat with the owner and kill a little bit of time...wrong move LOL.

I was looking around and saw a nice looking wood stock with hinged floor plate high on the shelf behind the counter. Curiously I asked what rifle it was and it was a rifle he just received on consignment and hadn't even tagged it yet...It was a Rem 700 Classic in 8x57 Mauser 24" barrel :what: Its in 98% condition there is one "ding" on the blued barrel the stock is perfect, bright clear bore, bolt is smooth, and there isn't a spec of rust anywhere.

I FELL IN LOVE I seem like odd ball not so common calibers especially for the Southern US. I'm a reloader so it isn't much concern, but I do have some questions. What is the twist rate? How common is this rifle? What are your experiences with the 8mm mauser? Finally, Any general info about caliber, rifle, load data, experience, etc. is very much appreciated.

Here are pics:

Nice! A little hint, though. Your pictures will turn out better if you hold the camera/phone horizontal instead of vertical. ;)

what you have is a "Gem" of a rifle that is both accurate and powerful, each year of production was a different caliber for 10 years? (I think ??)
6.5x55 Mauser, 257 Roberts, 7x57 Mauser, 300 Savage, and 35 Whelen are just some of the calibers that come to mind.
Plenty of reloading info out there, been loading 8mm for about 15 years, each gun has it's preferred load.
My general hunting load is a 180 grn Nosler Ballistic Tip and H-4895 for 2700 fps, that's 1-1/4" @ 100 and 3" @ 200 out of my M24/47 Yugo Sporter,
D&T'd, welded bolt handle, Boyd's walnut sporter stock, Timney trigger, etc...
2 deer to it's credit, so far. Oh Yeah, Congrats on a "great find" !! range reports to follow, I hope !

Thanks Guy's I'm super excited. I have reloading components on the way. I chose 170gr Sierra's to try first. Any idea where data is that is rated for a modern action? I knew when I saw it I just couldn't leave without it :)

I wasn't even looking for a gun, but when I saw it I just knew that there was a spot in my safe for it. I seem to sell and trade rifles fairly often this one is gonna stay with me. I'll never have another one and especially in the condition and price I got it for.

Nice find! I like that it's in such great shape and that it's not your typical domestic caliber.

Oh the things that will follow us home. Those stray guns just know they'll get fed so well and have a nice shelf to "lie down" on at our warm and cozy homes. Feeding them is a bit expensive but WTHeck we must do our part for the homeless weapon. :D

It will get fed by feeding me (deer) lol. Got a scope mounted now I can't wait to shoot it. It will be a while as my range is closed till February. I'll have a range report eventually.

As far as twist rate, I have a Turk Mauser that actually shoots both 150gr and 200gr bullets quite well, actually amazing well. I have a K98 that shoots the heavier stuff better so I assume it has a faster twist rate.

I love the caliber. And it does a dandy job on deer. Anything of the larger calibers used in war to kill humans is sufficient to kill deer.

That is a nice rifle you have there. I was told that it was the 2004 model...I'm guessing that my rifle needs the Remington recall done to it, but they aren't getting it. The trigger on mine isn't great but its OK breaks at probably 5 lbs. If I shoot it and it shoots well I'll get a timney for it.

Mine is not going in for any recall either even though it probably should. It has the old style safety. The bolt is locked closed when on safe. You have to push to the fire position to open the bolt. That includes loading/unloading.

Love the Remington classic series, and I like the nice clean look of the stock. Great find!

My classic in .308 Win is my only deer rifle, it shoots 1" groups at 100 yards.

CarJunkieLS1, ya me too, I run a home for orphaned rifles, sounds like yours wants to run away and be fed here. If you pay the shipping, I'll feed her for you for, say...10years. Enjoy her and make memories.
