Gun laws and relocation

Well, I love Florida. I'm about 70 miles from tampa. If you can keep from having to live there, it might not be too bad, but then tennessee is good too. Cost of living in FL is skyrocketing, the real estate market is not in a happy place and spanish is becoming a neccessity in many areas. But, it's shall issue and you can buy lots of good stuff here.

Its true though, Hot and Humid in the summer.

Good luck!

Packman - PM'd ya! :)

Well y'all, the wife's lead in TN fell through but she has a stronger lead in FL. The headhunter hasn't said another word about UT and we can't find any listings via monster out there.

So, I guess we're getting used to the idea that FL may be our next home. The company interested in my wife is in Tampa. Can y'all pass along places to avoid and others with reasonable housing costs that will be within a 30 min commute distance? Are there public ranges close to the Tampa Bay region? We shoot everything from defensive handguns to AR-15 to hunting rifles to milsurps. How about hunting - any WMA's nearby? I'm going to have to scale back on calibers I think, .300winmag and .45-70 might be a bit much for FL game. I was stationed in Orlando while in the Navy ('89-'91) for boot and A school and I remember hunting around Ocala but I only ventured west to Tampa once to go to a beach.

For rural-type living you might want to check on Polk Co. (east of Tampa up I-4). The Tampa area has gotten very built up and congested but it still looks ok. My dad's retired north of there, there are some ranges but not as many as I'd expect.

Orlando is good, provided you stay away from the appropriate areas. Central FL Rifle/Pistol Club is over on the SE side of Orlando and is a great operation, action shooting and up to 300 yard range.

Figured I'd dig this back up since we're still looking and I've still got questions.

First, we both have multiple resumes out in multiple areas, Nashville and Tampa being the hot spots right now. The niche field my wife has experience in only exists in certain cities, those two being among them.

Second, how bad is WI (gun/freedom wise) besides no CCW? And how bad are transport hassles through IL? She just got contacted by a recruiter for a firm in Madison.

Third, are there any good sites to compare cities? Gun laws? Things like general cost of living, housing costs (rent or buy), community profiles? I'd like to be able to do a straight comparison against Johnstown, PA (nearest "city") to see the changes a move would make. My wife is from the DC Metro area (Woodbridge/Stafford) so we KNOW we can't afford that area and I worked in Bethel CT from time to time with my previous employer so I KNOW we can't afford that area. She grew up suburban and I grew up rural so we're trying to find compromise. (she's been adapting to rural while here in PA)

There really needs to be a gun folk employment agency/exchange!

The current governor is not your friend.

No CCW, open carry is technically allowed on the books but is functionally not allowed in practice. There is a disorderly conduct law in place as well which is sometimes applied rather liberally. Cuss too loud in a canoe so that a mother and child hear you and you can be charged with it.

Beyond that it isn't too bad. Milwaukee city and Madison are exceptions to the rule. Madison is a nice town, but it is both a political center and a college town rolled into one. I wouldn't mind living in Madison but would probably end up just outside of town if I found a job there. Currently I live north of Milwaukee in an adjacent county.

Driving to here through Illinois, just stay on the interstate, pay the toll road fees, keep your firearms locked up and out of sight and out of reach, and try to avoid doing anything to get pulled over. You should be able to make it across the state on a tank of gas if you avoid high traffic congestion times.

Digging this back up ... with an update!

Well, my wife just accepted an offer for a job in Brentwood TN ... so looks like the move to TN is happening now. We should be in state the first or second week of April. I'm working with a few headhunters in the area now but if anyone knows of any openings in IT in the Nashville/Brentwood area send me a PM (I'm a systems admin or technician).

So gun stuff ... until we convert our residency I know we'll both be able to carry on our PA LTCF but how does TN differ from PA on carry regs? We can carry most every where here in PA. What's the process for getting a TN CCW? Residency requirement? Good ranges in the area? Once we get settled we'd like to try to meet some of the local TN THR folk. :)

Thanks y'all!

I'm also moving from PA to TN. You've got six months from the time you establish residency in TN to get your TN permit. PA one is good until then. You will have to take a class (offered several times every week in some places around Nashville) $115 fee, fingerprinting. So much more of a PITA than PA, but, TN permit is widely accepted in other states. I believe no carry in places that serve alcohol. Here, don't take my word for it. http://tennessee.gov/safety/handgun/handgunfaqs.htm
