Just getting back into firearms. This might be a funny question... But What gun magazines do you all subscribe to?

What magazines bring you value and informative articles? Not looking for biased info because advertisers etc...

I subscribe to Handloader magazine, good info in there.I don't subscribe to,but I often buy Rifle, handgunner, and once in a while Guns and Ammo.

Pretty much the only time I pick up gun rags is when I'm going on a trip and won't have reliable access to the internet, or won't have a computer.

If I have a computer, I usually have plenty of .pdf documents to read, however I still like the bring dead tree stuff with me.

So to answer the original question, when I do pick the rags, I go by the titles of the articles. Looking at the last batch, I see Handloader, Combat Handguns, Guns & Ammo, and Rifle Shooter.

Shotgun News, lots of historical info, though they do tend to re-run the same stuff over and over again for the 'Treasury Editions".

Yep the American Rifleman and American Handgunner. If you are into handguns at all I would definitly subscribe to that one.
mingo

I take Am Rifleman, Am Handgunner, G and A, Guns, and a couple more.

Yes, I am fully aware that I do not get unbiased reviews of new guns, etc. etc. And that advertisers somehow influence content. Cheap entertainment.

But I prefer to read rather than to watch TV. Where, for example, you get unbiased news and intellectually stimulating programming. And where advertisers don't influence content.

And then there is the internet......hey.....no trash on the Net, right? And no advertising, either.

Thanks, but I will stick with gun-rags and other printed matter of interest as well as selected places on the Net, such as here.

Hey....read widely and pick and choose what to believe.

American Rifleman: the best $35 you'll spend on a magazine.

But for non-organizational magazines I subscribed to several over the last year and a half as I've gotten back into shooting. I'm going to let a couple a go this year, though: Guns and Ammo and Gun Tests will not survive the next re-up, I may replace them with Handloader. I do like American Handgunner and Combat Handguns and Handguns is the same handgun articles from Guns and Ammo anyway.

I try to avoid the mags with heavy Mas Ayoob stuff, but hes every where now, but i prefer GUNS! and then Guns and Ammo, and an occasional GWLE

I don't subscribe. Well, I get the Rifleman from NRA as I am a life member. But I don't subscribe to the monthly magazines mostly because I don't want a string of "gun" magazines streaming to my home address alerting anyone and everyone in the postal service that someone who likely owns nice weapons lives at "this address".

Before you start laughing, try living in a border city with a high population of illegal aliens, etc.

I've kind of given up on gun magazines in general. Most gun writers seem to be rewriting the same pieces year after year, and after the first ten years or so of subscriptions it gets a little boring.

IMO...

Handloader and Rifle were the gold standard through the 90's, but quality has really dropped since then. They're still a little better than most, but...

Shooting Times, Guns & Ammo, Shooting, and Gun World (I'm sure I'm missing a few) typify the "standard" gun magazine, aimed at the novice-to-intermediate shooter, and are made up primarily of the kind of repetitive writing I've already complained about. I scan them on the news stand and occasionally bring one home when I see something especially interesting, but honestly, that's rare these days.

I utterly detest all the "tactical" rags that are so popular right now. Things like Guns and Weapons of Law Enforcement, Combat Handguns, S.W.A.T., etc. seem to be written by (and intended for) teenaged videogame enthusiasts. I'm sure they're popular with some folks around here- but I'm also sure there are plenty of teenaged videogame enthusiasts around here too. :p

Gun Tests gets a lot of lip service as an "unbiased" magazine, which I think is true. But I'm bothered by their tendency to review one sample of a particular gun and make sweeping judgments about all examples of that gun.

Shooting Sportsman and Gray's Sporting Journal are pretty decent magazines for hunting enthusiasts, IMO, but can be a little pretentious. Double Gun and Single Shot Journal is in the same vein, but better done and with some extremely knowledgeable writers. If you're interested in handguns (or anything less than 50 years old) then it might not be your cup of tea.

American Handgunner is by far the best for handgunners, IMO. They have several very good authors and a wide variety of subject matter - it's not all 1911s or single actions or whatever.

Precision Shooting is probably best for riflemen, or at least riflemen who are interested in facts about accuracy, rather than the usual bull**** you see online and in the "typical" gunrag.

That's all I can think of, or have experience with... hope it helps.

Just buy a few years of back issues at a flea market or yard sale. You'll get all the articles you would see in a subscription for a lower price.

What's wrong with Mas Ayoob?

Lots of people don't like him, and he isn't the end all be all of defensive shooting. Both times I went to Gunsite if you wanted to get a chuckle from the instructors, bring up Ayoob and watch the eyes roll.

Here is some a link detailing someone else's beef with him.

http://www.firearmstactical.com/tacticalbriefs/2006/04/03/0604-03a.htm

To me, he is just another writer of the tired old cliches of "bone-crushing recoil" and "blinding muzzle flash".

Lots of people like him. He has tried to promote responsible ownership of guns for defensive purposes, and that's good. He does have lots of good advice. Just take him with a grain of salt.

I currently get "GUNS" , "ShootingTimes" , and "Guns and Ammo"

I will get a subscription and then let it lapse. I just paid $8.00 for a year of ShootingTimes and I think I paid around $10.00 for a year of G & A

Cheap entertainment

If I want to read any of the latest gun magazines I just go to my nearby Borders, get something to drink, and sit down and read them. The only ones I would consider buying, after reading them, are Shotgun News and Small Arms Review.

Unfortunately being retired and with out a real life I suscribe to the all, my favorites are Handloader, Guns, American Handgunner, and Shotgun News. I tend to keep most copies of the glossy magazines and use them as refrence when looking to make a purchase.

what's wrong with supporting firearms publications? of course being a retired old coot with nothing else to read that i agree with for the most part it just comes easy.

One of the best resources for wildcatting/long range shooting and gadgetry is "Varmint Hunter". My dad let his subscription expire a couple years back but I found it chock full of useful (if often very technical) information.

I used to get a half dozen gun magazines every month but now only get the NRA magazines and Guns And Ammo. G&A gives me enough info on new guns that are coming out and I'd really rather get actual reviews from the gun forums. I can't remember the last time I ever saw a gun magazine trash a big advertiser.
Sorry, I can't believe that everything that they review is a winner. Everyone gets a lemon once in a while but you won't see it in the major gun magazines.

I like Guns Magazine and Shooting Times. Of course, I get a magazine through my NRA membership. I currently subscribe to Shooting Times, and get Field & Stream which is not really a gun magazine. I have taken advantage of low priced subscriptions to Guns & Ammo, but usually just let them die when the special rate lapses. I have subscribed to Shooting Times a long time and recommend it.
